Junior Database Administrator

The Web Operations team is recruiting for a Database Administrator with operations experience. This is a great role for someone who is passionate about being a DBA and eager to learn from the senior experts from our reputable DBA team.

The position will suit a candidate who has experience with writing SQL, Linux and some scripting/programming skills.

Primarily the role will involve developing an understanding of the NAP database infrastructure, monitoring alerts, checking backups and scheduled processes. As skills progress the candidate will analyse and improve database performance by checking slow query logs, improving indexes and tuning server parameters.

The candidate may have basic knowledge of database administration principles, HA, DR, performance analysis and tuning. MySQL and Postgres experience is an advantage although applicants with experience in other RDBMS technologies will also be considered.

The role involves the use of automation tools for database deployment, configuration and monitoring. The role may eventually involve working with developers on the database design aspects of upcoming projects.

Day-to-day responsibilities will include

  • Execute 'Business As Usual' scripts on databases.
  • Handle ah-hoc requests from database users.
  • Automate database infrastructure.Create, maintain and monitor database alerting/trending systems.
  • Improving performance of database systems.
  • Supporting code releases.

Essential Skills & Requirements

  • Enthusiastic IT professional open to new ideas and learning new things.
  • Exposure to SQL coding
  • Proven ability to work to stringent deadlines
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail


  • Experience in database tuning optimisation and performance analysis
  • Data modelling skills
  • Linux/Unix background; familiarity with standard Unix tools

Hours: 37.5 hours per week.
