Personal Injury Paralegal - Bury St Edmunds
The Role
As a Paralegal in our team, you will work closely with the other fee-earners to assist in the delivery of personal injury services to the clients. You will help them with tasks such as drafting witness statements, dealing with disclosure, liaising with / instructing experts, carrying out legal research and preparing trial / evidential bundles. The role will also involve some general administration including filing and typing, as well as otherwise supporting the team.
As a Paralegal, by way of example, you can expect to undertake the following tasks:
- Assist the team in all the facets of managing a mixed multi-track caseload
- Attend meetings and conferences (eg, with clients, witnesses, etc)
- Assist with the legal cost process
- Help to co-ordinate activities with your team and Legal PAs / support services, as appropriate, to ensure smooth running of client files and in general
- Drafting letters and documents (eg, Witness Statements, Case Summaries, letters of instruction, etc)
- Dealing with all aspects of disclosure
- Research (eg, quantum, liability, etc)
- Meeting deadlines (utilisation of electronic diary system)
- Maintaining files so that they (and you) adhere to the administrative systems and procedures (including all aspects of client care, Due Diligence and Money Laundering, etc)
- Attending internal and external courses as required
- Keeping up to date with law and practice
- General administration (eg, filing, file closing / opening, etc)
Knowledge, skills and experience required
Ideally, you will have at least the following:
- Paralegal (or equivalent) litigation experience (preferably in personal injury but not essential)
- Knowledge of law and legal principles and practice and procedure relevant to personal injury claims
- Good planning and prioritisation; to be highly organised and able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Be proactive and able to work independently, as well as with others, on tasks set
- Excellent attention to detail
- Strong client focus and a willingness to take responsibility for client care / matter-related work
- To be IT literate and able to use a case management system (specific training will be provided)
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively with clients and all personnel at Ashtons Legal
- Have a flexible approach to fulfilling client requirements including the need to work beyond contractual hours where deemed necessary
