Architectural Technician

The Design & Technical teams are involved in all aspects of housing design and innovation. This team is also responsible for researching the best materials, at the best cost.


In terms of design, there’s the sheer variety of our sites, many of them brownfield and all of them with unique problems to solve. Our drive for sustainability, value and ever changing building and environmental legislation means that innovative and unique solutions are required. Most of the people in this team have an architectural or engineering background, and for all, we offer the opportunity to gain expertise in design and project management in a challenging thought-provoking setting.


  • Providing architectural support on preparation of upcoming and bid developments.
  • Preparing of site layout proposals on a number of sites and critiquing of third party designs.
  • Responsibility for gaining planning consents for allocated developments.
  • Assisting the Design Manager with the preparation of Planning Applications for new developments and throughout the planning process.
  • Assisting the Design Manager to discharge relevant planning conditions.
  • Overseeing developments through planning, building warrant and onto site through to completion. Addressing architectural issues through the build process to ensure works progress on programme. Liaise with the Technical Manager regarding warrant and post planning issues.
  • Attending meetings at various stages of projects (Design Team Meetings, Planning Meetings, Prestart Meetings etc).
  • General liaison and co-ordination between other parties, both internally and with External Consultants (Architects, Engineers, Landscape Architects, Ecologists, Archaeologists, Acoustic Consultants etc).
  • Investigating technical problems encountered and provision of economical viable solutions.
  • Reviewing and Preparing site wide Title Plans.
  • Preparing Deed of Conditions and plots feu plans.



  • Be proficient in layout design, optimising principles of good design and placemaking, while ensuring target densities are met.
  • Be conversant on Scottish Planning Policy and Planning guidelines for Edinburgh, Fife, Lothians and Borders.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to function well within a team, both within the department and the wider business unit.
  • High proficiency in Autocad is vital and MS Office experience is essential.
  • Be able to demonstrate high levels of problem solving abilities and be detail oriented to produce and co-ordinate high quality drawing information.
  • Time management skills are an essential requirement to manage a number of priorities and changes to meet business needs.
  • A sound knowledge of the current and recent Scottish Technical Standards are essential together with knowledge of the NHBC regulations.
  • A high degree of commercial awareness and be customer focussed.
