Team and role overview

  • The Responsible Investing (RI) team sits within the Impact Group and plays a crucial role in reinforcing BII’s reputation as a responsible investor. The team ensures BII meets its regulatory commitments and drives higher standards in financial crime risk management, corporate governance, and environmental and social practices across the private sector.
  • The RI Team is structured into three sector teams aligning with our investment pillars: Financial Services (FSG), Infrastructure & Climate (I&C), and Industries, Technology & Services (ITS). It is made up of Business Integrity (BI), Corporate Governance and Environmental & Social (ES) specialists, focusing on the management of a range of risk-related topics. With professionals based in the UK, India (Bangalore and Mumbai), Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, the team manages investment assessments, portfolio oversight, capacity building, issues management, and market-shaping initiatives that drive improved responsible investing standards and add value across BII’s portfolio.

 

Purpose

  • AML Analysts play an important role in ensuring BII meets its Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorist Financing regulatory commitments with respect to Know Your Customer (KYC). In this capacity Analysts provide a range of financial crime operational services, including financial crime customer due diligence support, KYC onboarding checks, remediation and refresh, sanctions screening and alert investigation support. In addition to working alongside RI leads on obtaining and refreshing KYC documentation, supporting customer due diligence activities and managing screening hits, AML Analysts are also a key liaison function with the 2nd line Financial Crime Compliance team on KYC/CDD matters.

 

Responsibilities

  • Liaison and collection of KYC documentation for counterparties to BII transactions, including initial review to ensure these documents fulfil BII’s requests and meet our AML/CTF regulatory requirements
  • Assisting with the KYC/CDD periodic review process, to ensure effective liaison with 2nd line and timely completion of KYC/CDD by Business Integrity deal leads
  • Ownership of full Customer Due Diligence and KYC process for certain lower risk transactions, grant facilities and other transactions, as required.
  • Producing key statistics and metrics to provide visibility on periodic reviews and identifying areas for improvement
  • Provide support to RI leads on complex structures or unusual investment contexts to meet our identification and verification requirements; liaise with FCC as appropriate on complex KYC onboarding or periodic refresh updates.
  • Vetting the positive and false positive screening alerts relating to investees, obligors and trade transactions and recording the information in the relevant system for on-going monitoring, alongside RI deal leads where positive matches are identified
  • Supporting on KYC/CDD-linked research tasks
  • Escalating adverse media, regulatory watchlist, PEP and Sanction screening alerts as required to the Business Integrity deal leads
  • Supporting KYC Files Remediation
  • Supporting in analysis and reporting of key risk metrics relating to 1st line AML/KYC controls
  • Providing high quality administrative support – managing data maintenance and record keeping

 

The candidate

  • Candidates should be strongly motivated by BII’s development mission and ideally demonstrate some commitment to development or social goals through previous executive or non-executive activity.

Essential skills

  • Good working knowledge and experience of the UK Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Regulations, Sanctions regulations and the JMLSG Guidance Notes.
  • Must have detailed knowledge and suitable experience of KYC/CDD requirements for UK regulated financial institutions, with experience in handling AML/CFT/KYC related matters in a UK regulated financial institution that manages institutional clients (either from investment management / private equity / investment or commercial banking etc.)
  • Knowledge of a range of financial crime methodologies, tools and techniques including AML regulatory screening software such as Dow Jones, LSEG/Refinitiv, ComplyAdvantage etc
  • University degree or relevant professional qualifications in a relevant discipline
  • Self-motivated to provide a professional level of expertise and administrative support
  • Strong attention to detail, proactive and organized
  • Ability to collaborate well across multiple teams, departments and locations and build rapport with key internal and external stakeholders and compliance colleagues
  • Ability to anticipate risk and react/escalate appropriately
  • Experience in cleansing, analysing and summarising financial crime/regulatory data
  • Systematic approach to work with an attention to detail
  • Highly motivated and outcome-driven
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage and prioritise a busy and diverse workload with a range of deliverables for a variety of stakeholders.

Desirable skills 

  • Knowledge or experience of financial crime regulations and AML/KYC operations in emerging markets is preferable
  • Knowledge of a South Asian language and/or French.
