Team and role overview

The Chief Investment Officer (CIO) works with investment teams to set and execute the investment strategy across all sectors, products, regions and capital portfolios. The Office of the CIO covers three areas overseen by the Chief Investment Officer:

·         Asset Allocation and Capital Solutions

·         Investment Policy and Decision Making

·         Portfolio Management and Special Situations (for both fund and direct investments)

 

The Investment Policy and Process Team sits within the Office of the Chief Investment Officer and works to ensure that BII’s investment decision making process is effective, efficient and consistent with BII’s policies. The team also supports the implementation of some parts of the organisation’s investment processes, for example the funds and co-investment programmes.

There are currently 5 levels in the team – Coordinator, Associate, Executive, Manager & Team Leader. For this vacancy, we are looking for a Manager to join the team.

 

Purpose

This role will report to the Head of Investment Policy and Process, and will focus on maintaining and enhancing BII’s investment decision-making process in order to ensure it keeps pace with our growth and ambition to be a best-in-class investor. 

It is an excellent opportunity to take a senior role in the development and delivery of BII’s investment decision-making architecture, and in the process to gain a bird’s eye view of all of BII’s current and potential investments.

Responsibilities

Overarching BII investment policy & process

Leading and supporting, as appropriate, in the delivery of specific workstreams relating to the Investment Policy and Process team’s core role in BII’s investment decision making process, including:

·         The evolution of existing and development of new investment policies and decision-making processes, as BII’s strategy and operations evolve. Including maintaining BII’s Investment Process Manual and associated documents. As appropriate, presenting them for approval to BII’s Markets Committee and Board.

·         Monitoring the functioning of BII’s existing investment decision-making processes, and overseeing the work of the IP&P team in administering the process, in order to identify issues, and design and implement resolutions as early as possible. Including responding to requests for guidance on process from deal teams and IC members.

·         Overseeing the production and distribution of analytics, reporting and insights related to BII’s pipeline and approvals to inform stakeholders and aid in making our investment processes more streamlined and effective.

·         Oversee OCIO’s engagement with External Investment Committee members, including (i) the design and delivery of regular updates for them, to ensure they are kept up to date, and (ii) involvement as appropriate in recruitment and review processes.

 

Implementation of specific investment processes

·         Coordinating the implementation of BII’s co-investment framework, including:

·           Producing and communicating analysis on BII’s co-investment portfolio, and guidance on effective implementation of the co-investment framework.

·           Maintaining the OCIO-owned elements of the framework. In particular, ensuring that fund manager capacity ratings are kept up to date, and supporting the cross-team co-investment working group.

·           Monitoring and as appropriate escalating issues on specific co-investment transactions in BII’s investment process.

·         As relevant, providing similar support for other investment processes, i.e. beyond co-investments.

 

Line management

·         Acting as line manager for one or more junior members of the Investment Policy & Process team. Supervising and coordinating their work, mentoring them in order to support their development.

 

Inter team collaboration

·         Collaborate effectively with colleagues across both OCIO and the various wider investment and operational support teams to help ensure effectiveness of our investment processes.

 

The candidate

Background, skills, aptitude

 

Looking for a mix of:

·         Significant experience of investment decision-making processes, ideally gained through active involvement in reviewing and proposing new investments as part of a buy side deal team.

·         Experience of a broad range of investment instruments through which BII invests (i.e. private equity, private debt and fund structures).

·         Experience of line management, and in coaching and developing people in a small team environment.

·         Master’s degree or similar.

·         Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in financial analysis.

·         Excellent project management skills, including independently driving workstreams.

·         Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively at all levels, both verbally and in writing.
