Team and role overview

  • This role sits within the Business Applications team which is responsible for the overall application landscape within BII, ensuring coherency. Central to this is the use and extension of Power BI which is core to the application strategy.

Purpose

The role will be responsible for designing and implementing Power BI solutions for stakeholders, primarily from BII’s core portfolio management system (eFront) and BII’s Enterprise Data Warehouse. Beyond IT, you will work closely with business users and the Change Management team to understand their needs and provide insightful, data-driven solutions. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with Power BI and a deep understanding of data visualisation and business intelligence concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Develop intuitive and visually appealing reports, KPI scorecards, and dashboards using Power BI desktop.
  • Connect data sources, import data, and transform data for Business intelligence.
  • Integrate Power BI reports into other applications using embedded analytics.
  • Apply advanced-level calculations on the data set, presenting complex data using data visualisation techniques.
  • User training and co-development with advanced users.
  • Implement row-level security on data along with an understanding of application security layer models in Power BI, including role-based access control.
  • Monitor report performance and usage
  • Create data models and queries, optimising for performance and scalability where required.
  • Automate data refresh processes.
  • Responsible for design methodology and delivery documentation.
  • Conduct data quality checks and report findings to appropriate business stakeholders.
  • Define Power BI standards and best practices and improve process and user adoption.
  • Stay up to date with the latest Power BI features and wider industry trends.

The candidate

Background, skills, aptitude

  • Successful candidates will have a background in Power BI development from within a financial environment, preferably from within Private Equity/Private Debt/Funds/Investments/Financial Markets.

Essential skills:

  • Very strong experience with Power BI, DAX, SQL.
  • Row level security.
  • Experience with data sources such as SQL / SharePoint / Excel.
  • Understanding of SQL Data Warehousing.
  • Strong stakeholder management.
  • Experience of working with both “business as usual” teams and “business change” teams
  • Experience operating in Agile delivery methodologies.
  • The ability to build strong relationships and to engage, negotiate, influence and collaborate across the organisation, advocating Power BI adoption and promoting its benefits to business stakeholders.
  • Ability to explain data and technical concepts to a non-technical team or client audience.
  • Outstanding written documentation and verbal communication.
  • Microsoft Fabric experience, including Data Factory.

Desirable skills:

  • Operated in a Private Equity environment or for a DFI.
  • Exposure to portfolio management.
  • Certifications are desirable.
  • Knowledge of Power Apps is an advantage.
  • Candidates should be strongly motivated by BII’s development mission and ideally demonstrate some commitment to development or social goals through previous executive or non-executive activity.
