Team and role overview

  • The Communications team is responsible for managing the organisation’s reputation, building and maintaining public confidence, and helping generate a welcoming operating environment – both internally and externally – to support the organisation as it executes its mandate and strategy.
  • This includes building public confidence in BII and fostering support for our work in the UK; fostering a welcoming operating environment for our work overseas; establishing BII as an authority on private sector development and impact investing; and connecting and inspiring our employees behind our mission. 
  • Our target audiences are broad. They range from UK stakeholders who hold us accountable; prospective and existing investees; broader in-market audiences; impact investors and responsible businesses; the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO); to our own employees.  
  • Broadly the team oversees communications strategy, media relations, reputation management, digital communications, events, thought leadership, content creation, marketing communications, and internal communications.

Purpose

This is a key role in a high-profile corporate team. The role will provide projects, events administrative, communications and co-ordination support to the external and internal communications teams to help deliver its strategy and keep their plans on track.  The role is ideal for a candidate with a background working with a communications team, who combines strong event management skills, digital communications, organisational skills, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn new communications skills.

Responsibilities

Supporting our core communications activities

  • Support the team with the development of our regular communications reporting and dashboards (eg: media coverage, analytics and metrics, monitoring etc)
  • Build internal networks to support the team with sourcing and posting content and stories from within BII on our internal and external channels.
  • Maintain key sections of our website in a timely manner, including uploading press releases, key documents, and maintaining the people section.
  • Maintain the communications team page and content on intranet ensuring latest guidance and information about the team and processes are up to date
  • Manage our library of photography and videos, including working with an external photographer to ensure we have photos of key members of staff.
  • Support alignment across the Communications team of deal announcement timing for internal and external platforms and audiences.
  • Provide internal communications and digital communications support in the team, where needed.
  • Manage external and internal communications materials including assistance with drafting, proof-reading, production, and stock control.
  • Support the maintenance of accurate data in our CRM system and media database.
  • Manage the general enquiries and alumni inbox, providing prompt and helpful responses, or sharing with appropriate teams within BII; as well as maintaining our tracker of inbound media enquiries.
  • Undertake any other projects as required by the Director of Communications.

Team management and co-ordination

  • Manage the communications grid, communications calendar, team inbox and rotas and update the corporate events calendar and other key content on Sydney (BII’s intranet) with key events.
  • Provide diary management for the Director of Communications, and day-to-day organisation and diary management for team meetings and team activities.
  • Arrange regular team meetings and team events, including managing room bookings for each, and capturing key actions for the team.
  • Process invoices, expenses and contracts to ensure timely approval; keep all relevant logs up-to-date.

Projects and event management support

  • Co-ordinate cross-team projects.
  • Support BII’s digital presence, including assisting in the creation of digital content, such as social media assets and newsletters.
  • Assist with the organisation of BII external and internal events including event set-up, invitations/reminders and the production of materials. Attend and assist at events as required.
  • Support with event timelines, guest lists, and post event follow up actions
  • Support the promotion of events across BII’s social media channels, including drafting posts, coordinating content with the wider communications team and capturing live content during events to enhance visibility and engagement
  • Track event budgets, process invoices and maintain accurate records of suppliers.
  • Support the measurement of event impact through feedback collections, reporting and recommendations for future improvements for external and internal events.

The candidate

Background, skills, aptitude

  • A background working within a communications team is a strong advantage.
  • Superb organisational and administration skills, ability to manage your work and co-ordinate the team to help them operate at maximum effectiveness.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • A positive attitude, energy and enthusiasm; and willingness to learn and try new approaches.
  • Proactive in identifying gaps or inefficiencies and suggesting improvements
  • Demonstrates curiosity and a global mindset with interest in development finance, ESG or impact investing.
  • Flexible and adaptable; willing to ‘roll up your sleeves’ and muck in with the variety of tasks and projects that the team undertakes – some of which are unpredictable.
  • An approachable and friendly manner to help build productive and positive relationships both internally and externally.
  • The ability to diplomatically manage relationships with senior executives and service suppliers.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products is essential (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, SharePoint); in particular, experience of creating engaging PowerPoint presentations is important.
  • Knowledge and experience of tools to create designed content for digital use and to edit videos are desirable.
  • Candidates should be strongly motivated by BII’s development mission and ideally demonstrate some commitment to development or social goals.
