The Role
Purpose
BII’s policy is to measure all investments at fair value in accordance with IPEV guidelines. Investments are increasingly made at larger ticket sizes and with more complexity. BII’s portfolio consists of a broad range of investments, from innovative early-stage technology businesses through to large infrastructure and climate investments.
In this role, you’ll have an opportunity to work on equity, mezzanine and debt valuations and responsibilities will include: liaising with investment and portfolio teams to understand investment structures and performance; compiling and analysing investment and investee company data; understand the markets, industries and geographies in which BII operates; developing and maintaining the valuations models; preparing high-level analysis of results and presenting the valuations to senior management.
Valuation Process and Responsibilities
- Preparing valuation models using various methodologies including discounted cashflows and market multiples.
- Perform the valuations of portfolio investments in line with BII Valuation Policy and in accordance with IPEV guidelines and IFRS.
- Assist with collating investee company data and market data from internal and external sources as inputs to the valuations process.
- Perform analytical reviews of cashflows, financial performance, key value drivers and metrics.
- Review, challenge, and document judgemental inputs provided by investment teams in an independent and objective manner.
- Gain an understanding of investment structure, features and returns.
- Organizing, analysing, and explaining large data sets and clearly communicate findings
- Document and present analysis, results and conclusions to valuations team and Valuations Steering Committee (VSC).
- Support development and management of quarterly deliverables and valuation reports, not limited to VSC reports, back testing, value attribution, portfolio and sector analysis.
- Collaborate with investment teams and finance team to ensure correct interpretation and reporting of data and valuations.
- Contribute to the design and enhancement of the valuation models and support the delivery of a well-controlled process and year end audit.
- Assist with the review and update of BII’s valuation policy and guidelines.
The Candidate
Background, skills, aptitude
The ideal candidate will have a good selection of the following:
- Good understanding of valuation methodologies specific to private equity and private debt
- Exposure to emerging markets or [Infrastructure and Climate] or a demonstrable interest in developing economies and impact investing is highly desirable
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to deal with stakeholders at all levels in a confident manner.
- Analytical skills and ability to understand both technical and commercial subjects.
- Ability to prioritise and organise own workload to meet deadlines
- Ability to analyse large datasets and excellent attention to detail
- Strong Microsoft office skills with the ability to build models and use spreadsheets (VBA skills would be a plus).
- Good knowledge of Bloomberg, Capital IQ, and other similar software
- A team player with a proactive approach and good interpersonal skills
- Candidates should be motivated by BII’s development mission and ideally demonstrate some commitment to development or social goals through previous executive or non-executive activity
