Team and role overview 

 

  • The FSG Portfolio Management team, is part of the Financial Services Investment team and sits at the heart of FSG’s mission to improve the reach and depth of financial services and strengthen financial institutions across our markets. As the portfolio grows in scale and complexity, the team has also grown. The team is a dynamic function that preserves capital, navigates diverse markets, and ensures both financial and developmental outcomes through strategic portfolio construction.

Purpose 

The Associate/Executive will be in the FSG Portfolio Management team in London, responsible for a portfolio of debt and equity investments across Africa, South Asia, the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean. The successful candidate will be primarily focused credit analysis and research. This includes monitoring of existing and new investments. You will be trusted to run monitoring tools, generate actionable insights, and maintain strong relationships with investees and internal stakeholders. Your ability to anticipate risks, support decision-making, and contribute to the team’s strategic objectives will be key to your growth and the portfolio’s performance. 

 

Responsibilities 

 

  • Conduct credit analysis on emerging market financial institutions, corporates, and sovereigns.  
  • Provide internal credit recommendations to drive credit-driven decision making 
  • Publish research notes for internal and external distribution 
  • Manage client relationships, understand their needs and design tailored solutions to create meaningful impact in BII’s markets 
  • Develop strong relationships across FS teams, Coverage teams in our markets and Development Impact, ESG, Legal and Risk teams 
  • Contribute to FSG’s investment strategy, portfolio construction and asset allocation in alignment with corporate targets 
  • Take ownership of one-off projects and support the team in delivering on new initiatives as the portfolio evolves.  

 

The candidate 

Background, skills, aptitude  

 

  • Successful candidates will have a background in credit, or risk, ideally with formal credit training from a rating agency, bank, fund, or similar institution

Essential skills:  

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and French. 
  • Experience with emerging markets banks and/or sovereign risk analysis. Familiarity with African and/or Asian markets is highly desirable.  
  • Demonstrated relationship building skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams and with external partners.  
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including financial analysis and modelling.  
  • Willing to travel 

Desirable skills: 

  • Familiarity with corporate credit risk analysis and the key differences between credit risk to a financial institution and to a corporate.  
  • Flexible, adaptable, and a self-starter 

Candidates should be strongly motivated by BII’s development mission and ideally demonstrate some commitment to development or social goals through previous executive or non-executive activity.
