Team and role overview
Climate change is one of BII’s key priorities, as articulated in our 2022-2026 corporate strategy and Climate Change Strategy. BII has also committed to implementing the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). Together, these set out an ambitious agenda for contributing towards the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
Purpose
The Climate team is hiring a Manager focus on supporting strategy and investments for mobilising commercial capital for net zero and climate resilient development pathways. The person will lead work for the climate team, to engage with I&C, FSG, private capital mobilisation and corporate strategy teams on BII’s approach towards increasing mobilisation. This will involve working to develop strategy and where relevant supporting teams on early-stage origination/business development of climate finance transactions, due diligence and portfolio management (including through the newly established Climate and Environment TA facility). The role will also support the MD in internal and external stakeholder engagement and thought-leadership on mobilising climate finance for adaptation investments. Key responsibilities will be for leading BII’s engagement with the Adaptation and Resilience Investors Collaborative, other DFIs, MDBs, impact and other institutional investors on a new Resilience Challenge. Further work will be to work with the Capital Solutions team to engage potential partners on initiatives for scaling private finance for adaptation and resilience.
Responsibilities
The Climate Change Manager will:
Strategy
• Lead for the climate team in engaging teams across BII on climate related strategies, including for mobilisation capital for net zero and adaptation and resilience.
• Lead in aligning climate related policies and tools with broader BII strategic goals.
Origination/business development/due diligence support
• Support teams across the Impact and investment groups to develop climate finance mobilisation strategies for originating transactions that align with BII’s climate impact goals.
• Provide advice on net zero transition and Paris alignment for climate mobilisation investment opportunities, and support investment teams with investor alignment.
Portfolio management
• Support originate and implement climate technical assistance projects for transition finance and climate adaptation and resilience.
Partnerships and external engagement:
• Support the development of a new Resilience Challenge working closely with the UNEP FI Secretariat of the Adaptation and Resilience Investors Collaborative;
• Develop partnerships with other investors and potential funders on existing and potential new catalytic funding models for A&R.
• Lead in developing a flagship communication product demonstrating progress towards implementation of BII’s Paris Alignment strategy (2020-25).
The candidate
The successful candidate will:
Essential skills
• Strong knowledge, relationships and networks in climate investing and policy, with relevant experience working within and/or closely with the commercial investor community;
• Be skilled and demonstrate track record of strategy development and stakeholder engagement, both internal and external, in order to drive the development and successful delivery climate-related strategic outcomes;
• Be experienced in using quantitative and qualitative tools and frameworks to assess climate finance and the Paris alignment of various sectors;
• Be experienced on practically integrating climate considerations into investment decision-making and/or advisory;
• Be up to date with the latest developments related to emerging climate issues of strategic interest to BII, including as relates to capital markets and mobilisation;
• Familiar with the scientific underpinnings of climate change policy, particularly the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and goals of the Paris Agreement.
• Awareness and ideally experience of working with key climate-related tools, target-setting and reporting standards such as the Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), IIGCC Net Zero Investment framework 2.0; Transition Finance Market Review and Science-Based Targets Initiative;
• Awareness and ideally experience of assessing physical climate risk, and opportunities for increasing private investment for climate adaptation and resilience;
• Be experienced in managing data in multiple sources and formats, coordinating across internal and external teams;
• Be skilled at performing self-directed research and integrating complex qualitative and quantitative information from various sources to produce clear and concise recommendations and reports;
• Possess strong attention to detail, and ability to communicate complex subject matter to non-technical audience.
Desirable skills
• Experience of deploying capital and efforts to maximize development impact across different capital pools, and ideally have experience in deploying blended finance solutions;
• Experience of capital markets and investor strategies for mobilisation;
• Understanding of impact investing and the investment cycle from origination to exit.
