Team and role overview
BII’s Risk function is responsible for overseeing BII’s risk management framework, including:
- Leading initiatives to clearly articulate BII’s risk appetite.
- Designing, implementing and ensuring the effective functioning of BII’s risk framework in line with the organisation’s activities and external requirements.
- Supporting risk owners in the identification and understanding of risks, enabling them to make informed decisions about how to mitigate risks to be consistent with risk appetite. Providing effective challenge to first line risk owners to raise standards and improve risk management processes in the rest of the organisation.
- Provide risk reporting to executive committees, the Board and Shareholder, enabling these bodies to understand the risks facing BII and how they are being managed.
Risk management is critical to every aspect of our businesses at BII. The Risk Office is central to identify, mitigate and manage risk and maintain transparency with all stakeholders.
Purpose
The role of the Credit and Impact Risk Data Analytics Associate is to support the Credit and Operational Risk team in achieving its objectives, with a particular focus on designing and strengthening credit risk and impact data governance, capture, analysis, presentation and reporting in order to enhance investment risk understanding and management at BII, including Impact and Climate Risk data. The Risk Data Analytics Associate will work across BII’s investment, impact, IT and operations support teams.
Responsibilities
- Support the overall Risk department mission and objectives
- Organise data collection and curation processes, enhance governance of Risk data
- Working with impact teams to map and understand impact data, develop innovative rating, quantification and stress test approaches.
- Monitor Impact, including Climate risk on the portfolio
- Working with the credit risk team to build data dashboards to conduct analysis to enable portfolio management and risk limits processes
- Working with the IT team to provide risk management input to the enterprise data warehouse
- Maintain internal risk policy documentation
- Support other change initiatives across the organisation
Ad-hoc projects
- Manage risk-team wide processes, as agreed with the Chief Risk Officer and Credit and Operational Risk Director
- Support the Risk team in the delivery of projects focused on enhancements to the risk framework or mitigation of specific high-priority risks
The candidate
Background, skills, aptitude
- 5+ years of relevant experience within an investment bank, consultancy, DFI or private equity fund
- Strong understanding of private markets e.g. private equity, private credit or infrastructure and ideally some exposure to emerging markets
- Familiarity with financial market concepts and drivers
- Proven experience in analysing datasets to extract meaningful insights that can inform strategic decisions and operational actions.
- An understanding of the role played by DFIs in impact investing
Technical Skills
- Advanced Excel skills are essential, with a preference for candidates experienced in automating large spreadsheets.
- Solid knowledge of PowerBI and PowerPoint
- Strong data analytics skills and familiarity with a range of risk management techniques including stress testing, exposure measurement and monitoring.
- Highly numerate and analytical
- Demonstratable ability to gather, evaluate, distil and present risk management information
- Strong problem-solving abilities, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving data issues
- Effective project management skills, capable of handling multiple tasks and deadlines

- Intellectual curiosity and ability to embrace change and manage ambiguity
- Strong interpersonal skills with a persuasive, diplomatic, confident manner
- Ability to communicate complex topics clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Ability to work across all levels within the organisation and provide constructive challenge
- Ability to establish and retain effective working relationships with stakeholders
- Attention to detail when preparing reports and analysing data
- An understanding of and belief in the development finance sector
- Mission alignment: Ideally candidates should be strongly motivated by BII’s development mission and ideally demonstrate some commitment to development or social goals through previous executive or non-executive activity
