The Role

  • Making direct equity investments is central to our strategy. Such investments allow us to target capital at businesses that provide significant employment opportunities and which have the potential for strong growth and the creation of even more jobs.
  • The Equity team, invests private equity into businesses directly, either solely, or by co-investing with other direct investors or alongside local GPs across Africa and South Asia.
  • Investments are from our balance sheet and, depending on the opportunity, we have the flexibility to take equity stakes.
  • The Impact Accelerator is part of the DfID Impact Programme and managed by CDC. The team make direct investments in opportunities that are highly developmentally ‘Impactful’ and have good potential to become financially viable, but which would not achieve sufficient return on capital for a fully commercial investor or operator to pursue them without the involvement of the Facility.

 

The intern’s primary role will be to support the Impact Executives of the team. This will include:

  • Supporting the team in evaluating the potential impact of new investment proposals and working on live deals as appropriate;
  • Preparing discrete impact materials for external and internal audiences (e.g. investment committees, other meetings, deal briefing sheets, annual publication);
  • Supporting the team in monitoring the impact of existing investments.

Responsibilities

 

Evaluation and Research

  • Undertaking research into specific sectors, countries and regions as part of an on-going mapping exercise
  • Initial filtering of investment proposals for deals that fit within IA’s impact and investment mandate
  • Conducting impact analysis, due diligence and proposing monitoring indicators that align with CDC’s Results Framework and yield investment-specific learnings
  • Producing updates on market developments across the geographies we support, monitoring factors that could have an impact on pipeline and portfolio companies
  • Engage closely in the investment, understand the development impact, participate in due diligence work.
  • Assisting with preparing investment committee papers and participating in the meetings, for the Impact Accelerator and Commercial teams

 

Development of impact materials and publications

  • Produce high-quality impact analysis and narrative as needed on aspects pertaining to the facility and the investments for staff, senior management, Board, DfID the shareholder & external stakeholders.
  • Understand the various DI aspects on a case by case basis by investment and write up case studies as and when appropriate for sharing with DfID and broader audiences.

 

On-going monitoring of executed deals

  • Monitor and evaluate agreed impact KPIs specific for each investment.
  • Record investment experiences both successful and aborted to ensure maximum learning on where this facility model works best and where it has the greatest impact.

 

The Candidate

 

Background

  • Currently enrolled in an MBA or equivalent program
  • University degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline, preferably in development, economics/econometrics, finance
  • Work experience in a relevant field, within development, management consulting the investment industry or private equity
  • Work experience in developing countries, preferably in Africa and South Asia
  • An awareness of and appreciation for CDC’s objectives

 

Technical Skills

  • Business acumen: Able to translate Results Framework indicators to those customised to the deal and vice versa in a lean and pragmatic manner.
  • Rigorous approach to due diligence and deal selection process
  • Strong analytical skills: convert data into compelling evidence, exhibiting modelling skills
  • Market Knowledge: Some knowledge of relevant markets and sectors, understanding of emerging market environments
  • Sector Knowledge: Understanding of equity investments and the challenges inherent in this type of investment
  • Ability to develop and run data management systems and produce high-quality analysis, in the context of ‘poor numbers’, while respecting data integrity and confidentiality
