Summer Intern, Impact Accelerator Facility, Direct Equity (1 position available)

Our Mission

  • Our mission is to support the building of businesses throughout Africa and South Asia, to create jobs and make a lasting difference to people’s lives in some of the world’s poorest places.
  • We aim to invest in countries where we can have the greatest impact. In countries where the private sector is weak and jobs are scarce.
  • We invest in sectors where growth leads to jobs – both directly and indirectly. In sectors such as manufacturing, agribusiness, infrastructure, financial institutions, construction, health and education. Last year, the businesses we invest in created more than a million jobs.
  • We are successful because we are a high quality investment organisation, using the best commercial skills and judgement to make investments in great companies and support them to grow over the long term.  We therefore want to attract people with these skills but who are motivated to use them to dramatically improve the private sector in Africa and South Asia

The Role

  • Making direct equity investments is central to our strategy. Such investments allow us to target capital at businesses that provide significant employment opportunities and which have the potential for strong growth and the creation of even more jobs.
  • The Equity team, invests private equity into businesses directly, either solely, or by co-investing with other direct investors or alongside local GPs across Africa and South Asia.
  • Investments are from our balance sheet and, depending on the opportunity, we have the flexibility to take equity stakes.
  • The Impact Accelerator is part of the DfID Impact Programme and managed by CDC. The team make direct investments in opportunities that are highly developmentally ‘Impactful’ and have good potential to become financially viable, but which would not achieve sufficient return on capital for a fully commercial investor or operator to pursue them without the involvement of the Facility.

The intern’s primary role will be to support the Impact Executives of the team. This will include:

  • Supporting the team in evaluating the potential impact of new investment proposals and working on live deals as appropriate;
  • Preparing discrete impact materials for external and internal audiences (e.g. investment committees, other meetings, deal briefing sheets, annual publication);

  • Producing updates on market developments across the geographies we support, monitoring factors that could have an impact on pipeline and portfolio companies
  • Engage closely in the investment, understand the development impact, participate in due diligence work.
  • Assisting with preparing investment committee papers and participating in the meetings, for the Impact Accelerator and Commercial teams

Development of impact materials and publications

  • Produce high-quality impact analysis and narrative as needed on aspects pertaining to the facility and the investments for staff, senior management, Board, DfID the shareholder & external stakeholders.
  • Understand the various DI aspects on a case by case basis by investment and write up case studies as and when appropriate for sharing with DfID and broader audiences.
