The role

Purpose

  • The Communications team undertakes proactive communications, to maintain confidence in, and enhance the reputation of, CDC’s work. We have responsibility for both internal and external communications.

  • CDC’s role and significance as a development finance institution has grown significantly in the last few years and will continue to grow through to 2021. This is reflected not only in our growing employee base and our growing balance sheet, it is also reflected in our 2017 – 2021 Strategic Framework which sets out a clear ambition for CDC to become a thought leader on private sector development.

  • We have been encouraging our employees to share more of their expertise internally on our intranet. We now want to find efficient and creative ways to share this work, both internally and externally and using all channels, including a new external website, as part of our ambition to be a thought leader. Areas where we want to share expertise include private sector development, as well as strategic priorities including mobilising private sector capital to Africa and South Asia, women’s economic empowerment and climate change. This role will help us to achieve that.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the Communications team in our plans to deliver both thought leadership communications and day-to-day communications content across external stakeholder, media and internal communications.

  • Write, create or edit expert content for external and internal audiences, including, for example:

    repurposing content shared on the intranet

    attending internal and external events to generate content

    producing case studies and stories from within our portfolio

    promoting research, guidance, evaluations and other papers

  • Produce creative and engaging content for online, social media and print communications, including written and visual.

  • Manage CDC’s regular newsletters, including the CEO’s monthly update. Ensure these are appropriately promoted across all channels.

  • Develop content for external meetings, including briefings and presentations.

  • Develop content which we can promote with trade publications and specialist newsletters.

  • Work with colleagues to gather statistics and data for use in corporate communications materials.

  • Support colleagues across the organisation to ensure that our corporate brand and identity is used consistently and appropriately.

  • Keep abreast of latest best practice and new products in online and social media.

  • Measure and evaluate the impact of CDC’s communications, and support the development of plans based on these results.

  • Undertake any other projects as required by the Head of Strategic Communications.

 

The candidate

Background

We are looking for an individual with about one year’s experience in corporate communications. They must be supportive, collaborative and able to generate fresh ideas for how we can communicate better. We are looking for an ambitious, bright individual who can contribute to our busy and high-performing team. This is a new role and so there is scope to push the boundaries and gain a wide range of experience.

The successful candidate will be confident with online and social media and confident in dealing with colleagues, including senior professionals across the organisation.

Experience in the financial sector, international development or investing for impact is desirable. An ability to spot political and / or controversial issues is a must.

The role may require some overseas travel. Ability to speak French is desirable.

Alongside all of this we are looking for someone who cares about our mission and will be able to relay the passion that we all feel for what we do to internal and external audiences.

Essential

  • About one year’s experience in a communications role.

  • Proven experience of creating high-quality communications materials, including print, online and social media.

  • Proven experience of using different communications techniques and channels to deliver a message.

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills – able to avoid jargon and write concisely and with clarity.

  • Degree level education or the ability to demonstrate equivalent level of knowledge and experience.

  • Demonstrable interest in international development issues.

Technical skills

  • Familiar with social media, in particular Twitter and LinkedIn.

  • Adobe Illustrator / Photoshop highly desirable.

  • Ability to speak French or other languages used in our markets is desirable.

Personal skills

  • Collaborative – this role will involve working across the Communications team and with people across our organisation.

  • Open to giving and receiving feedback.

  • Energetic style and can-do attitude.
