The Role

Purpose

CDC Group is looking to grow its Environmental and Social (E&S) team at the Associate level. The associate’s primary role is to support the E&S team with their work in relation to due diligence, monitoring and team related activities. This support will include (but is not limited to):

 

  • The evaluation of E&S aspects of new investment proposals in our debt and equity business lines.
  • Monitoring the portfolio and engaging with investees and project sponsors, including but not limited to the monitoring of E&S action plan items as well as annual E&S reporting from investments.
  • Supporting CDCs E&S value additionality programs (including the development and management of technical assistance, management of consultants and other duties as necessary).
  • Maintaining the E&S deal pipeline and tracking deals by stage of approval.
  • Collecting and analysing E&S information as part of CDC’s knowledge management system.
  • Drafting E&S case studies and other materials to enable CDC to share experience of how E&S improvements can work in practice.

 Responsibilities

  • Assist the E&S Team with the due diligence (DD) of potential transactions including review of Environmental and Social Assessments and Audits, Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS) as well as other E&S /technical documents; commissioning specialist DD, drafting investment paper comments and assisting in negotiating E&S conditions.
  • Working with CDC’s Investment, Development Impact and E&S Team, and with others within CDC, to ensure that CDC’s E&S requirements and policies (CDC’s Code of Responsible Investing) are consistently applied.
  • Portfolio monitoring and providing evaluations of investment Annual Monitoring Reports. This will include, but is not limited to, logging annual monitoring reports, reviewing and assessing performance, monitoring of action plan items and follow up as necessary.
  • Maintaining the E&S deal pipeline and assisting the team by tracking deals by stage of approval and completion.
  • Assisting in the provision of E&S training and other support, both for CDC’s internal investment teams and for CDC’s investees
  • Collecting and analysing E&S information as part of CDC’s knowledge management system.
  • Assisting with the preparation of periodic reports on E&S matters for internal and external parties, including CDC’s Board and shareholder.
  • Participating in the compilation of case studies to illustrate how responsible business practices and improvements on E&S matters contribute to business success.
  • Managing E&S databases, filing and file management systems on behalf of the E&S Team.
  • Contributing to the maintenance of positive relations with other teams within CDC.

The Candidate

Background

  • University degree in a relevant discipline: environmental science/ ecology; social sciences (including specifically sociology or anthropology), economics, development studies or finance, and preferably a Master’s degree in environmental or social development studies; development studies / development finance; or a similar area.
  • At least two year’s relevant work experience, preferably within development finance, environmental consulting, banking or the investment industry.
  • Experience in developing countries (ideally Africa and or South Asia) is desirable.
  • Willingness to travel on behalf of CDC.

 Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of E&S issues as they apply to businesses operating in emerging markets / developing countries as well as the challenges associated with implementing international E&S standards.
  • Technical skills and experience in relation to one or more of the following are particularly welcome: labour and working conditions, waste and waste management, climate, water and gender.
  • Familiarity with the IFC Performance Standards is desirable.
