Fleet Training & Technical Manager

JOB SUMMARY

The Fleet Training & Technical Manager will collaborate closely with the Head of Fleet Operations to craft and implement the training strategy for Uber Boat by Thames Clippers. This marine professional will concentrate on business growth and career development, managing all fleet training activities, ensuring compliance with the Port of London Authorities Continuous Personal Development (CPD) points system for our Masters, and establishing a clear training pathway for crew members to thrive in their roles. By identifying and implementing new and enhanced methods of working, the Fleet Training & Technical Manager will contribute to making Uber Boat by Thames Clippers "The most loved transport in London and the obvious choice." This role is essential in ensuring business initiatives are achieved through the creation of a robust talent pipeline.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Marine professional with Boat Master License or equivalent Certificate of Competency
  • A minimum of five years’ experience serving in a command position onboard a passenger vessel, and/or experience working in a Marine Manager role
  • Experienced leader with the ability to mentor, coach and develop a team of Managers and trainers
  • Experience in developing and implementing training strategies
  • Proven track record of teaching marine syllabus with the capability to deliver training on the Boat Master Syllabus.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others around them to perform at their best
  • Ability to identify improvement areas and communicate these upwards
  • Ability to respond quickly and take a “hands on approach”
  • Calm disposition with the ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to analyse, interpret and transform data into actionable and strategic decisions.
  • Able to proactively plan, manage, delegate tasks and work to assign deadlines
  • Adept with budget management and forecasting
  • Experience of working under MCA regulations
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Capable of delivering ISM training

 

Desirable

  • Port of London River Thames Local Knowledge endorsement and Passenger Operations specialist endorsement
  • Public Transport System knowledge
  • Project Management experience
  • Knowledge of the High Speed Craft Code
  • Passenger Ferry or High Speed operations experience

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead, manage, and nurture a team of Training Officers and Type-rating Instructors, ensuring they have the knowledge and tools to excel in their roles, while staying focused on the success of the business.
  • Implement UBTC’s Fleet Training Strategy by defining clear goals and actions, assigning responsibilities, and setting and managing timelines.
  • Identify and implement new training methods to enhance the knowledge and skillset of our crew, ensuring UBTC are industry leaders, remain compliant with all international and UK legislation, and continue to deliver a world-class service.
  • Collaborate with operational managers, trainers, the business scheduling team and fleet controllers, to  deliver training activities for all ranks.
  • To maintain and develop the training matrix for all operational staff, ensuring all statutory requirements are met, certification is maintained, any training needs are identified and a timely training solution is delivered.
  • Ensure statutory training programs are delivered, this includes but is not limited to STCW, ISM, the High Speed Craft code and Boatmasters Licence (BML) training and Bridge Resource Management training programs.
  • Develop and implement new and engaging training content and materials, with particular emphasis on e-learning and development of our LMS.
  • Build productive and mutually beneficial relationships with key stakeholders, both internally (HODs) and externally (contractors, local regulatory authorities and educational institutions).
  • Promote and uphold UBTC values, ensuring employees feel supported and empowered within their role and confident to engage professionally at all levels.
  • Support the Head of Fleet Operations with projects and business cases, taking the lead as needed and ensuring appropriate resources are allocated to deliver projects.
  • Responsible for compiling management information for strategic workforce plan and balance scorecards meeting.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Fleet Operations to develop action plans aimed at improving results.
  • Develop type-rating training guidance notes and type rating books for all vessel in the fleet for all ranks.
  • Develop our drills training offering to ensure crew are able to respond to all emergencies
  • To monitor and maintain the operational training budget for the Fleet Operations team
  • To update the relevant budget holder(s) as appropriate so that adequate provision is made for training.
  • To ensure that HR legislation and training best practice are adhered to in line with policy and procedures
  • In conjunction with operational managers and the Head of Fleet Operations, develop a strategic workforce plan to ensure adequate resources are available for training.
  • Maintain all training related records.
  • Identify new training suppliers and manage ongoing relationships, ensuring all required external training is met in a cost efficient manner.
  • To support operational managers with the selection process for new team members working afloat and with progression and development of staff into higher ranks
  • Support in the development implementation of customer service training, to improve the overall customer experience.
  • Ensure that you comply with all Health and Safety regulations and safe working practice as required by current legislation and the Company’s Health and Safety Policy and practices
  • Ensure that all relevant information is communicated speedily and accurately in a way that ensures that the information is received and easily understood
