Senior Engineering Manager

Howdens is looking for a highly capable, dynamic Senior Engineering Manager for our prestigious manufacturing site in Howden, East Yorkshire. 

As the Senior Engineering Manager, you will:

Be responsible for the effective delivery of Engineering Maintenance within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.  While leading a multi disciplined Engineering Team and working cross functionally to deliver our Group Engineering Maintenance Strategy. Working closely with our operational teams to enhance the capability and performance of our facilities, production processes, and product QCDSP (Quality, Cost, Delivery, Health and Safety, and People), ensuring technical and environmental legislative compliance.

This is an exciting opportunity to:

  • Lead a team of up to four Maintenance Managers
  • Mechanical/Electrical team, comprising approximately fifty-five talented individuals.
  • Manage significant budgets, including a maintenance budget of £3.1 million, a labour budget of £3.3 million, a utilities budget of £5.0 million, and an engineering inventory holding valued at £5.0 million.

  • A champion of continuous improvement with strong relationship-building and communication skills across the manufacturing Group.
  • A strategic thinker with a focus on both immediate operations and long-term planning (1 to 3 years).

What will you be doing as a Senior Engineering Manager:

  • Strategically manage, develop, and implement facility projects and plans in line with the group-wide Engineering Maintenance Strategy and associated standards and policies.
  • Implement and uphold effective engineering and maintenance standards, adhering to technical, legislative, and group standards.
  • Act as the custodian of manufacturing maintenance standards, developing, implementing, and maintaining these within the business.
  • Lead and develop the site engineering team, fostering a high-performance culture, energy, and diligence while managing the operations budget.
  • Drive continuous improvement by optimizing current processes through best practices and new technologies, creating a progressive working environment.
  • Ensure efficient and effective resource allocation across the site.
  • Manage the financial aspects of the site engineering function, including responsibility for capital expenditure for restoration and upgrades.
  • Comply with SHE management systems, ensuring legal compliance.
  • Liaise with external best practice and legislative bodies/authorities to ensure compliance while aligning with Group Wide policies.

What do you need to qualify for the Senior Engineering Manager:

  • A degree or equivalent in an engineering discipline.
  • NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent health and safety qualification.
  • Proven experience as a strong decision-maker who has successfully driven and influenced engineering teams through ambition and diligence in a manufacturing environment.
  • A track record of driving continuous improvement and implementing lean tools.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to performance manage and develop team members.
  • 10 years of experience in a similar manufacturing/engineering environment.
  • Experience with technical and environmental legislation and processes that ensure compliance.
  • Proven operational management experience and change management capability.
