Senior Data Analyst - (FTC)

Purpose of this role

To manage the strategic development of IGD’s retail and economic data; delivering high quality insight and future forecasts, meeting and exceeding our members’ needs and fulfilling IGD’s commercial requirements.

Responsibilities of this role

IGD’s data in Retail Analysis, our biggest Online Insight Service:

  • Accountable for the robustness of our data offer on Retail Analysis, working with the analyst team to evolve the quality and impact of our data, from how we create it to how we make it available to our customers
  • Accountable for our data methodology and forecasting, ensuring the use of best practice and the Identification and implementation of training required
  • Supporting our customers’ queries and understanding what they want in order to modify and refine the provision of our data to meet their needs and stay one step ahead of our competitors
  • Identification and delivery of the steps to improve our data offer and update efficiency
  • Accountability for our data update and reforecasting cycle, co-ordinating the timely delivery of updates, championing best practice and introducing changes with the full support of the team
  • Supporting the delivery of impactful data in content across Retail Analysis and our ambition to increase our direct interactions with our customers through data engagement sessions and our Ask IGD service

Maintenance of our macroeconomic datasets

  • Ownership of all our macroeconomic data, including the research, creation and forecasting of variables, and ways to integrate into content
  • Identification and delivery of new or enhanced models and methodologies that will increase the value of our data proposition
  • Working with the international team of retail analysts to ensure we track the key economic issues and the implications for grocery operators and manufacturers globally

Data expertise beyond Retail Analysis

  • Aid the development of data propositions in other IGD products to better meet IGD’s customers’ needs
  • Deliver content for Solutions projects as required, with a focus on Datacentre-generated insight and global economic issues

Personal Attributes

  • Intellectually robust, ideally educated to degree level in Economics, or a numerical degree with a passion for economics
  • A passion for data; ensuring the high quality and integrity of insight and forecasting

  • Self-motivated learner, with an ethos of continuous improvement and interest in keeping up with the latest forecasting and modelling techniques

  • Experience in building macro-economic forecasting models and carrying out primary research
  • Experience of leading the deployment of Excel and BI based reporting solutions for external and/or internal users
  • Accomplished in leading project teams and collaborating with colleagues from multiple teams
  • Have enjoyed success managing and developing a number of simultaneous relationships and projects
  • Awareness of how the food and grocery industry works, in particular the macro influences that can affect sector and channel growth
  • Relevant experience preferably within a retailer, manufacturer, consultancy or industry body

Technical Skills


  • Proficiency with BI solutions (Power BI preferred, Tableau, Qlik, etc) including both in the creation and deployment of online reports
  • Advanced Excel and intermediate VBA (inputbox, for, while)
  • Intermediate SQL (joins, subqueries)


  • Knowledge of econometrics and econometric softwares
  • Coding abilities in R and/or Python


The role will be based at our head office in Letchmore heath, Watford and remotely as necessary.
