Shopper Insight Manager - FTC

As a Shopper Insight Manager at IGD, you will be a market research expert at the forefront of innovative research delivery, owning and managing the creation of business-critical shopper research for ShopperVista, IGD’s online brand for shopper insight.   You will identify opportunities to undertake bespoke projects for our clients, have the autonomy and ownership from conception to delivery, including undertaking primary shopper research, utilising the best available qualitative and quantitative methodologies and keeping abreast of sector developments and customer expectations.

Main areas of accountability:

Undertake and publish shopper research

You will own and manage the production of business-critical shopper research for ShopperVista, IGD’s online brand for shopper insight. The research will be action-oriented, pulling out the implications for our commercial customers. You will have ownership from conception to delivery, including undertaking primary shopper research (involving a mix of both quantitative and qualitative techniques) and writing the output. You will seek to ensure maximum commercial gain or business impact of the research by co-ordinating the marketing activity and liaising with the Press Office.

 

Bespoke research

You will identify opportunities to undertake customised projects for our clients. This will involve capturing briefs, writing proposals and securing sign off. Excellent client management skills will be required and you will own the primary research and project delivery, working with other members of the Shopper Team and the broader IGD team when required.  Outputs will include reports and presentations to clients. These projects will be delivered to an exceptionally high standard and often to a senior audience.

 

Developing IGD’s shopper and shopper research methodologies

Shopper Insight Managers must be the acknowledged shopper research experts at IGD, providing support across the business. You will ensure IGD is utilising the best available methodologies for all research, keeping abreast of sector developments and customer expectations and being open to new methodologies. You will possess strong negotiation skills to ensure we are securing value for money from our agencies.

  

Customer engagement and brand-building 

You will support activities that promote the development of ShopperVista as the IGD shopper brand, encouraging customer and stakeholder engagement. You will present at IGD and external industry events and discussion forums, and act as a spokesperson for IGD. You will create content for IGD.com and social media platforms, ensuring all our research is promoted effectively on the website.

 

Developing and maintaining contacts

IGD enjoys an outstanding industry reputation with broad links across food and grocery. You will enjoy unlocking the potential of this for our shopper insight products, and will develop and maintain a range of industry contacts. These will primarily be focused on grocery manufacturers and retailers, maintaining an ongoing dialogue with our customers to steer the IGD shopper research agenda, shape thinking and secure new commercial opportunities for IGD.

Commercial exploitation and budget performance

Alongside other Shopper Insight Managers you have a responsibility to support the delivery of financial targets as set out by Director of Insight. You will ensure your research projects are delivered to the budget set, and will work with the sales team to maximise sales opportunities. You will be proactive in identifying new commercial avenues.

 

Maintaining food and grocery industry knowledge

To ensure research outputs are business critical with clear implications and forecasts for the FMCG industry, you will have an active interest in the food and grocery industry, and will ensure a thorough and current industry knowledge-base is maintained.

 

What you’ll need to succeed:

 

Background

  • Strong, relevant experience within the market research industry
  • a solid grounding in market research, ideally gained from working for a market research agency is essential; client-side experience is also highly desirable.
  • Previous experience in a research role working on the FMCG retail market is also highly desirable, to display an awareness and understanding of FMCG trends and issues.
  • Experience of working within a commercially focused environment; identifying opportunities, writing proposals, pitching for projects and delivering to meet financial targets
  • Have enjoyed success managing and developing a number of simultaneous relationships and projects
  • Have developed strong, long-term and mutually beneficial relationships with customers
  • Have experience of presenting to audiences varying in size and seniority
  • Have awareness of how the food and grocery industry works, in particular the commercial interactions between retailer and suppliers

Technical skills

  • Have strong project and time management skills, able to own from concept to delivery
  • Excellent practical market research skills and applied attitudinal techniques.

 - extensive knowledge and application of both qualitative and quantitative research  methodologies is essential,

- experience in the entire research process; from design through to analysis and reporting  

- experience in managing both ad-hoc and large scale tracking projects advantageous.

  • Ability to turn shopper research into insights - be able to interpret customers’ needs and translate research in to actionable implications
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills with strong customer focus and the ability to network with gravitas
  • Presentation skills – a key part of a Shopper Insight Manager role is to deliver presentations of your research to a high standard, achieving impressive levels of impact. The job-holder should be confident delivering to both smaller group (i.e. 10 people with interaction), and on medium-sized public platforms (100+ people).
  • Have strong PowerPoint, Word and Excel skills with an ability to manipulate large data sets
  • Knowledge of how to effectively complete desk research for both research and stakeholder communication is essential.
