Director of Health and Sustainability Programmes

Purpose of the Job

  • To own and deliver the vision and strategy for our Health & Wellness and Sustainability pillars and maximise our charitable impact
  • To lead and develop the team across both pillars
  • To develop and nurture a strong network of external stakeholders across industry, academia, government and not for profit organisations in order to drive the scale and impact of our programmes

Areas of Accountability


  • Lead the long-term strategic development of our Health & Wellness and Sustainability pillars in collaboration with our industry stakeholders to ultimately deliver public benefit
  • Review and evaluate the effectiveness of our programmes on an ongoing basis, and make continuous improvements to maximise scale and impact
  • Identify and develop new workstreams to respond to the changing landscape of our industry and in line with IGD’s long-terms strategy and ambition



  • Own and deliver the scorecard for the Health & Wellness and Sustainability pillars, and support the delivery of the wider Charity scorecard
  • Develop and lead the implementation of an annual roadmap for the programmes, with clear and ambitious targets
  • Mobilise internal and external stakeholders to gain support for the roadmap
  • Ensure strong customer focus by creating a team culture of listening to customers, joining up the dots and responding at pace to opportunities
  • Manage team and budget appropriately to achieve the plan



  • Lead and develop the team across the Health & Wellness and Sustainability pillars to help them realise their full potential, taking a coaching and mentoring approach
  • Own the performance management, development, culture and succession planning across the Health & Wellness and Sustainability pillars
  • Manage issues arising within the team sensitively, effectively and in a timely way
  • Build strong working relationships across the organisation to encourage collaboration and sharing of knowledge
  • Champion agile ways of working and role model IGD values at all times


External Engagement

  • Lead the development and execution of the engagement strategy for the Health & Wellness and Sustainability pillars, working collaboratively with colleagues in the Charity and across IGD
  • Build strong network of senior contacts across the industry to increase engagement with our programmes and ensure they are highly relevant to the industry
  • Lead our industry working groups (Technical Leaders, Supply Chain Leaders, Nutrition, Sustainability and adhoc project groups) to discuss common issues and potential interventions, and identify how IGD can support
  • Work with Strategy and Corporate Affairs Director, to develop positive working relationships with external influencers in the public health and sustainability arena


Thought Leadership

  • Work with Strategy and Corporate Affairs Director, Chief Economist and advisory groups to develop and deliver IGD’s thought leadership strategy for the Health & Wellness and Sustainability pillars
  • Work alongside Head of Engagement and Innovation and Marketing and Comms team to deliver a strong external content plan which enhances IGD’s credibility and reputation

  • Head of Nutrition and Scientific Affairs 
  • plus 4 in-direct reports


Knowledge/skills/qualifications required

Leadership skills:

  • Ability to create a strong vision and strategy that delivers measurable impact
  • Experience of successfully leading through change
  • Proven track record in managing and developing high performing teams
  • Impactful communicator with the ability to adapt communication style to a wide range of audiences, internally and externally
  • Good networker at all levels of seniority
  • Commercial acumen and customer focus


Functional skills:

  • Experience of operating at a senior level within a commercial or not for profit organisation
  • Technical knowledge of the sustainability agenda, with a focus on environmental sustainability and practical experience of managing related projects and stakeholders
  • Sound knowledge of the food and grocery industry in the UK
  • Proven track record of leading cross-functional teams to deliver large programmes and managing complex stakeholder networks
  • An understanding of the public health landscape would be beneficial but not essential
