Airfield Ground Lighting Engineer

Role Purpose:

As an Airfield Lighting Systems Engineer, you'll play a pivotal role in maintaining, installing, and repairing AGL lighting systems and associated controls and power supply systems. Using your technical expertise, you will ensure the seamless operation of critical airfield equipment, including Air Traffic Control, Airport Fire Station, and Air Traffic Engineering sites and equipment. You can expect a dynamic environment where no two days are the same, with rotating shifts and occasional outdoor work..

Role Responsibilities & Main Duties:

  • Maintain and repair AGL lighting systems to CAP 168 standards, ensuring compliance with documentation.
  • Engage in live runway operations using radio telephony, showcasing your technical prowess and adaptability.
  • Conduct scheduled maintenance and operational repairs to uphold the serviceability of critical systems.
  • Manage AGL operational generators, UPS's, and standby systems, including refueling operations.
  • Perform monthly MALMS runs to document compliance for AGL photometric measurements, ensuring precision and accuracy.
  • Evaluate airfield ground lighting installations through daily inspections, guaranteeing optimal performance.
  • Serve as an approved person for AGL high voltage switching/isolation, adhering to safety protocols and HV permits.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation and logs, ensuring readiness for regulatory inspections.
  • Lead installation projects for small AGL systems in-house and coordinate larger projects with external partners.
  • Install, repair, and maintain electrical systems in airside buildings and airfield sites, including crash alarm systems.
  • Conduct regular stock checks of AGL spares and domestic electrical supplies, reporting replenishment needs.
  • Manage maintenance of apron and car park high mast lighting, contributing to overall safety and visibility.
  • Perform monthly checks on airport HV sub stations, ensuring reliability and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with various departments and external contractors, assisting with tasks ranging from forklift operation to escorting duties.
  • Provide 24-hour support to Air Traffic Control regarding airfield ground lighting system issues, demonstrating your commitment to operational excellence.

Qualifications: Essential:

  • Time Served Electrical Apprenticeship.
  • City & Guilds 2360 Pt2 & AM2.
  • NVQ Level 3 Electrical Installation.
  • City & Guilds Electrical BS7621 18th Edition.
  • Proven Track Record Within The Industry.
  • Good Level of Spoken & Written English.
  • Good Level of Physical Fitness.
  • Computer literate with Outlook, Excel & Word.
  • Valid UK driving licence.

Desirable:

  • City & Guilds Accredited AGL Courses. (AGL 1,2, AGLT, AGLSM)
  • City & Guilds Accredited Authorised Person. (APAGL)
  • City & Guilds 2391 or Equivalent.
  • Knowledge of CAA, ICAO for AGL systems.

Full training or retraining will be provided where necessary, which may include some residential courses.

 

Due to security checks required for this role, all candidates will be subject to a basic criminal record check (DBS) and must be able to provide a continuous five year checkable work history with verified gaps in employment. Full details and dates of all periods of employment/unemployment/education must be provided for the previous five years.

This role requires a CTC clearance and therefor you must have resided in the UK for the last 3 years.
