Events Manager

MedCity, the leading enabler of economic growth in Life Sciences in London and the greater south east of England, is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and driven individual to join us as Events and Missions Manager. You will work as part of a small and friendly team, building on an established network of key contacts and colleagues across a wide range of partner organisations and institutions.

Background

MedCity’s purpose is to enable economic growth in life sciences and support the development of an ecosystem in which all parts of the sector can thrive. We aim to work with our partners and other institutions to facilitate the development of new investments, companies and products for the benefit of London and the Greater South East (GSE) and, along with other cluster organisations, UK-wide. 

MedCity is a collaboration between the Mayor of London and the three London Academic Health Science Centres (Imperial AHSC, King’s Health Partners and UCL Partners). Launched in April 2014, it is the life sciences organisation for London and the GSE, incorporating the Golden Triangle of Cambridge – London – Oxford. The region is home to World-class academic Institutions including King’s College London, Imperial College, Queen Mary University of London, UCL, The Francis Crick Institute, The Institute of Cancer Research and the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Over 2,800 life sciences companies have made their home in the region.

MedCity provides a front door into the life sciences ecosystem for companies, investors and the life sciences real estate sector, connecting them to the expertise, resources, infrastructure, places and people needed to grow or to operate successfully in the leading life sciences cluster in Europe. MedCity works across all human health focused life sciences modalities – advanced therapies, biopharmaceuticals, medical technologies, diagnostics, digital health, data and AI applied to healthcare. MedCity connects excellence across academic centres, the health service (NHS) and industry.

Accountability

The Events and Missions Manager will be accountable to the Chief Executive and will work with MedCity’s Project Director on a day to day basis. The successful candidate will also work closely with the MedCity communications team and with colleagues responsible for delivering individual MedCity programmes.

The MedCity Organisation

MedCity is a small team of around 14 individuals, comprising of a mix of permanent and seconded staff. It is an experienced and expert team‎, with individuals drawn from across a range of professional, health, life sciences and investment backgrounds. The CEO will provide operational and strategic leadership, with the successful candidate being critical to delivering the "front door" service to MedCity's stakeholders and clients.  

MedCity has shared strategic goals and aligned activities with a number of other organisations and to facilitate this has some team members who work across such organisations, in particular with London & Partners, which is the official promotional company for London.

Key Responsibilities

MedCity has an exciting new opening for an events manager to work alongside our communications team. This new role reflects our increasing focus and demand on delivering high quality events within London, the region and the UK, as well as our developing portfolio of international visits, programmes and activities.   

Nationally, MedCity delivers a range of programmes within London and the greater south east of England, including the Advanced Therapies Network, Collaborate to Innovate and Angels in MedCity.  These programmes, alongside other MedCity projects and activities, result in a regular calendar of externally delivered events – meetings, workshops, pitching events, seminars etc.  We are looking for a highly organized, proactive and enthusiastic team player who can join us to ensure that our events programme is devised and delivered with a high level of professionalism, customer-focus and a strong desire for continuous improvement.  The successful candidate will have well developed project management skills, excellent interpersonal capabilities and will have a strong commitment to act as a representative and ambassador for MedCity’s mission and activities.  You will be supported and work with other team members, including our communications team, our research analyst and our office management team, but given the nature of MedCity, you will also be fully committed to being hands on and getting things done.   

MedCity is the lead delivery body for one ERDF funded programme (Collaborate to Innovate) and is a delivery partner in one other ERDF funded programme, the DigitalHealth.London Accelerator.  The postholder will work to deliver events in support of these programmes and, consequently a proportion of this role is funded by ERDF. 

MedCity also attends a regular set of international meetings and conferences.  These are typically focused around the “BIO” family of international conferences (BioEurope, BIO US and BioJapan etc.).  In some instances, MedCity is the lead organisation, responsible for devising and delivering missions to these meetings, bringing together a range of UK delegates drawn from academia, industry and the life sciences supply chain.  In all instances, MedCity is representing UK PLC and is working to support the reputation of London and the greater south east of England in terms of our life sciences ecosystem and capabilities.  Our objectives are to support trade, identify and encourage inward investment opportunities and to support collaboration, partnership and business development opportunities for our academic and NHS partners.  The successful candidate will work with other team members to project manage the successful delivery of these international missions, and will provide both project management expertise, along with a focus on MedCity brand awareness, the development of the appropriate look and feel for our presence, along with commissioning and securing relevant marketing materials. 

This will be a busy but exciting role, with a strong external focus and a requirement to work with all members of the MedCity team on a regular basis. 

Person Specification

The Candidate will ideally have the following key attributes:

  • Educated to degree level, with a strong preference for someone with a scientific or technical background who can demonstrate or develop a good understanding of life sciences and the life sciences ecosystem. 
  • Experience of working within the life sciences sector, an industry association, NHS or an academic background would be advantageous. 
  • Excellent and proven organisational skills, ideally demonstrating a track record of events conception, management and/or delivery. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with good verbal and written communications capabilities. 
  • Strong team-working ethos, which will be tested at interview. 
  • Creativity and the ability to work independently. 
  • Previous experience in; events management, Experience of working to promote a brand, or experience of developing or delivering marketing materials and collateral is desirable, but not essential. 

The successful candidate will be required to work closely with colleagues within other organisations, including our academic partners and with design, marketing and business team colleagues within London & Partners, the GLA and potentially with other Local Enterprise Partnerships.  The role will be based at MedCity’s central London office, but some travel around London and the region will be required.  There will also be the opportunity for the post-holder to undertake some international travel in support of MedCity’s missions and meetings.

Compensation The compensation package will be competitive to attract a candidate of suitable capability and experience.

Flexible working options will be available and proposals to work part time or flexibly from home will be considered, dependent on week to week flexibility and work commitments. Out of hours’ work, early and late, is expected from time to time and will be part of the role and some international travel may be required.
