Background

London & Partners is the Mayor of London’s official promotional agency. We promote London and attract businesses, events, congresses, students and visitors to the capital. Our aims are to build London’s international reputation and to attract investment and visitor spend, which create jobs and growth.

It is our privilege to promote London around the world, working in partnership with the Greater London Authority (GLA), Department of Trade & Investment (DIT), VisitBritain and other destination marketing organisations, the London boroughs and many other key stakeholders, as well as our 1,000-plus private sector partners.

Our target audiences are leisure and business tourists, event organisers, overseas businesses and investors, and prospective higher education students. Our marketing and promotional activities are designed to encourage visits, investments and spend in London now, as well as building London’s reputation to support its long term success. Our mission is to tell London's story brilliantly.

We are a not-for-profit public private partnership, funded by the Mayor of London and our network of commercial partners.

Purpose of role

This role contributes towards good growth outcomes for London by leading our efforts to secure private sector support for L&P's work on Foreign Direct Investment, Business Tourism and Trade and Business growth in London. Through this support we are then able to scale the impact and scope of our B2B work.

In particular, this position is responsible for:

  • Identifying potential new partners that would add value to the Directorate’s partnerships schemes for inward investment; the Mayor’s International Business Programme (which helps London-based companies to scale and export overseas) and Business Tourism. This requires a good understanding of where there are opportunities for us to innovate, delivering against our outcomes (jobs and growth for London; enhancing London’s international reputation; company revenue)
  • Leading on the creation of a handful of new strategic partnerships, working with MD Business. These are complex partnerships that cut across multiple lines of business and L&P teams and therefore need careful consideration in their set-up and operationalisation. 
     
  • Supporting our growing Corporate Innovation offer as we help to connect London and international based corporates with London’s talented and fast-growing companies.

Key tasks

This position will activate our allies in the business community who can support, scale and help to deliver L&P’s business outcomes. This includes:

  • Scoping out new partners for Business Directorate’s Partnerships schemes and events.
  • Leading on creating compelling and data-driven proposals for potential partners, reflecting mutual wins and shared priorities.

  •  Leading on determining the best approach for securing new partners. The Head of Business Partnerships will be expected to be able to work proactively and independently to secure new partners for L&P, while also recognising when it would be helpful to involve members of the Senior Leadership Team and Management Committee. 
  •  

  • Ensuring that there are reliable systems in place within the Directorate/L&P to put the new partnership into operation, delivering on the expectations set. This will require influencing team-members beyond your own team and ensuring that systems are logical, sustainable and achieving mutual value.
     
  • Helping to ensure an overall approach to partnerships that reflects the full diversity of London’s talent.

Knowledge and Experience

The successful candidate will demonstrate experience of:

  • Securing private sector partnerships;
  • Managing multiple stakeholders;
  • Working highly collaboratively across multiple teams;
  • Experience of International Trade and Investment, corporate innovation and leading a small team is also very helpful.
