The Role

We have a new and exciting opportunity for a 1 – 4 years PQE Barrister / Solicitor / Legal Executive to join the Agricultural Litigation team. The work will be varied including a mixture of commercial, public and property law matters. Although the focus of the team is contentious work, the team also maintain a large number of precedents, and frequently draft novel and bespoke agreements

The successful candidate will be expected to assist partners and other fee earners with larger cases and run their own cases under supervision. 

The role will include:

  • Assisting the team with the full range of agricultural disputes.  This includes but is not limited to contractual disputes, real property disputes, landlord and tenant, professional negligence work, partnership disputes and contentious probate cases.
  • Assisting with the preparation of cases for court, arbitration, the Agricultural Land Tribunal and mediation with opportunities when appropriate to undertake advocacy work and appear on behalf of clients in hearings on interlocutory matters.
  • Running their own litigation matters, with appropriate levels of supervision.
  • Drafting notices and settlement agreements and some non-contentious documentation such as commercial agreements, tenancy agreements or deeds of surrender.
  • Being included in the business development initiatives of the team.  The role will include preparing for seminars, drafting email bulletins and participating in business development events.
  • The successful applicant will be encouraged and supported in developing their career and profile in line with their interests or aspirations, such as through promoting niche practice areas within the agriculture sector or advocacy.

 Relevant experience required for role

  1. Strong academics
  2. Litigation experience and knowledge of civil procedure

The Candidate:

A successful application should demonstrate the following:

  • A commercial approach and an ability to provide clients with solutions. An interest and an ability quickly to understand the client's business is essential.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with clients, colleagues and other professionals.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills including an ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.  Work often has to be turned around very quickly to tight deadlines.
  • Positive and pro-active approach and the ability to respond under pressure and adapt to a variety of situations.
  • The drive and enthusiasm to succeed.

This role would suit someone with a litigation background in any sphere who wishes to join a sector focussed team where they will have an opportunity to develop a broad practice covering the many facets of agriculture and rural business, or a more established agricultural specialist looking to join an energetic dynamic team.
