Are you an expert education specialist with significant experience of working with autistic children and young people in specialist settings?
We wish to appoint an outstanding education specialist to work across South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM), providing specialist education input for neurodivergent young people across two services:
- Service for Complex Autism and Associated neurodevelopmental Disorders including Intellectual Disability (SCAAND) outpatient teams and
- Autism and Intellectual Disability Intensive Intervention Team (AID-IIT) which has an outreach model with close links to SCAAND
SCAAND is a national and specialist child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) team within SLaM who offer assessment and treatment to autistic young people referred from across the country. AID-IIT provides support to autistic young people and those with Intellectual Disability at risk of inpatient admission. As the Specialist Autism Education Lead, this role is to offer advice and support to ensure that young people’s educational needs are clearly identified, and there is a good plan to ensure they can engage with education.
This is a unique and exciting post, providing exceptional candidates the opportunity to influence the development of best practice in a range of settings and improve outcomes for autistic children and young people.

Within South London and Maudsley NHS trust:
- To provide an educational perspective within national and specialist CAMHS teams, and to support the development of CAMHS colleagues from other disciplines in terms of better understanding and working with educational systems
- Provide specialist education advice, support and consultancy to the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) across:
- SCAAND – outpatients: Three smaller team units based at the National Specialist CAMH) at the Maudsley hospital, which provide assessment and treatment for a range of mental health needs in the context of autism and other neurodevelopmental diagnoses. The streams include two teams working mostly with children of average intellectual and academic ability: ARD (Autism and Related Disorders) and Neuropsychiatry; and one stream focused on children and young people with learning difficulties: Mental Health of Intellectual Disabilities (MHID). All streams currently have a national remit within England, but particularly see young people from the London region and the south of England. The education specialist role is well established in these outpatient streams, and the successful applicant will provide support through observation and/or direct contact with children and young people in clinic or in school, alongside consultation to families, schools or local education providers.
- SCAAND – AID-IIT: an exciting service which aims to improve the lives of young people by ensuring their needs are adequately met by community services and schools, so that they do not inappropriately remain in mental health hospital settings for long periods of time. This service is primarily for autistic young people and those with Intellectual Disability. Young people will be from across London. The education specialist will contribute to assessments and care planning, including direct work with children and young people and consultation to education providers, families and local services.
- Produce reports and contribute to multi-disciplinary assessment reports; and write summarised education reports as needed.
- Be involved in service development, including delivering training and contributing to research initiatives as part of the Kings Maudsley Partnership.
As part of a unique partnership between SLAM and the NAS, the post-holder will benefit from access and links to NAS Autism Know How and other departments in addition to CPD opportunities through the NAS and SLAM.
The successful post holder will be employed by the National Autistic Society and seconded to South London and Maudsley NHS Trust.
