About the role

NRC Australia is currently hiring a Lead Project Engineer – Unfitted Trains Solution to join our team in Sydney, supporting the transformative Digital Systems Program for our client, Transport for NSW.

This is a newly created position designed to lead strategic workstream activities that will define a best-for-industry approach to accommodating unfitted trains on the Sydney Trains network. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping and delivering a safe, integrated solution that supports operational efficiency and service delivery.

What you will be involved in:

  • Lead the strategic workstream for the Unfitted Trains Solution (UTS), including development, delivery, and acceptance of related activities.
  • Manage a functional team to deliver system specifications, design variations, interface specifications, and approvals.
  • Oversee the integration and acceptance of a Portable Onboard Device (POD) with Digital Systems Program sub-systems (Onboard, Trackside, FTN, DTRS, TMS) and legacy infrastructure.
  • Ensure alignment with safety, performance, and operational requirements across the Sydney Trains network.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to drive technical outcomes and program success.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Strong background in engineering on signalling projects including leading engineering teams.
  • Experience in risk assessment processes.
  • Proven experience in trackside and onboard systems design, delivery and implementation.
  • Demonstrated success in delivering rail projects on time and within budget.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to capture stakeholder input across disciplines.
  • Developed report writing skills.
  • Ability to prioritise work and meet tight deadlines under pressure.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of one or more of the following sub-systems; Trackside, Onboard, FTN, DTRS, TMS or equivalent sub-systems
  • Chartered or working towards chartered or incorporated engineering status.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body.
  • Experience during the development and entry into service phase of new rail infrastructure.
  • Knowledge or experience of working in the Australian rail industry.
