ALNAP is a global network of NGOs, UN agencies, members of the Red Cross/Crescent Movement, donors, academics, networks and consultants dedicated to learning how to improve response to humanitarian crises. ALNAP believes that by improving the quality, availability and use of knowledge and evidence from previous responses we can make the system perform better and be more accountable. To do this, ALNAP facilitates learning between our Network Members, hosts the largest library of evaluations of humanitarian action, carries out original research and hosts events and conferences. ALNAP is looking for a Head Research and Impact to lead the ALNAP Secretariat’s research agenda and to develop, fund-raise for, conduct and manage high-quality and innovative research projects. The Head of Research and Impact will lead specific high-profile policy research and advisory projects, engaging with policymakers in research and advisory processes, and disseminating results. Specifically for the Triennial ‘State of the Humanitarian System’ report. This role will provide senior-level representation and external engagement for the ALNAP network on major research and policy agendas, interacting with senior officials and policymakers.

  

Recent ALNAP highlights include:

  • Delivery of the 2018 Edition of the State of the Humanitarian System (SOHS). The SOHS is an independent study that compiles the latest statistics on the size, shape and scope of the humanitarian system and assesses overall performance and progress. Published every three years, it provides a unique sector-level mapping and assessment of international humanitarian assistance.
  • Delivery of the 32nd ALNAP Annual Meeting on the topic of relevance. The meeting aimed to answer the following questions
    • How best to understand what’s most relevant when people’s needs are diverse, dynamic and sometimes at odds with expert views?
    • Who gets the power to decide what’s relevant and how?
    • To what extent can humanitarian aid be culturally and contextually relevant, while upholding principles and delivering on time and at scale?
    • Indeed, is it possible for the western-bred humanitarian system to transcend its origins in order to do so?

 

 

About you

 

  • Internationally recognised expert in global humanitarian action.
  • A post-graduate degree in relevant discipline, preferably a PhD.
  • Extensive and deep knowledge of key issues and organisations related to global humanitarian action.
  • Extensive experience in policy-oriented research at a senior level, demonstrated by a track record of influential publications
  • Extensive experience in design and implementation of high-level, global meetings
  • Experience of leadership and management at senior level, in an academic or policy environment.
  • Strong track record of engagement in major humanitarian global policy processes
  • Excellent research and analytical skills, a capacity to write clearly and persuasively, and first class oral communication skills.
  • A demonstrated capacity for policy advisory and or public affairs work, based on a rigorous approach, and an innovative and creative communications ability.
  • Ability to translate research and policy ideas into compelling and fundable projects and initiatives.
  • Skills in negotiation, listening, communication of ideas, problem solving, decision making.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, providing both leadership and mentoring for less senior staff.
  • Proven organisational and time management skills, including managing a complex and varied workload and timely delivery of research projects for large Donors.
  • Proven ability to fundraise and build up a coherent portfolio of research and advisory work.
