The Pirbright Institute
Located in close proximity to London, The Pirbright Institute delivers world-leading research to understand, predict, detect and respond to viral disease outbreaks and has recently received substantial infrastructure investment to support this role. We study viruses of livestock and humans that are endemic and exotic to the UK using advanced tools and technologies to understand host-pathogen interactions in animals and arthropod vectors. In addition, our major strength in understanding the immune systems of livestock provides a platform to control endemic diseases and respond to emerging threats. These studies are carried out ruminant, avian and arthropod hosts in contained facilities that are in many cases offer unique capabilities within the UK.
Organisation position and purpose:
The purpose of the role is to create a dynamic and highly collaborative research group in an area of strategic relevance to the Pirbright Institute. We wish to recruit either an early career stage fellow or experienced group leader to drive the development of a programme of work that aligns with our strategic priorities and complements our unique facilities. We have a specific interest in programmes of work that would include:-
Other subject areas will be considered on a case by case basis, but applicants will be required to research their relevance both to the Institute’s aims and existing research areas. We are an internationally renowned centre of expertise in viral pathogens, playing a key global role in supporting policy decision making regarding their detection and control and carrying out high quality research. Hence, we expect applicants for the role to possess a clear direction on the area of fundamental science they wish to address and the technical background to achieve that vision.

To support this work plan, the successful applicant for this role will have an excellent personal track record in high quality peer-reviewed publications, at Group Leader level, or the vision to accomplish this at Fellow level. Experience in both securing competitive grant funding and in efficiently managing small to large scale projects is also essential for more senior appointments. To make the most of this opportunity the group leader we appoint will need to possess an excellent grounding in areas relevant to the institute and the ambition to advance use of cutting-edge technologies in their field.
