Communication and Capability Lead

In a nutshell

Sainsbury’s is a data rich business – with information collected from consumers, suppliers and colleagues.  We believe that there is huge value in these data in driving value for our customers and, in turn, value for our shareholders.

To-date, there has been some great work done which has started to realise some of this value, but there is significantly more opportunity bought about by developing the right information solutions to help solve often complex business challenges.

The Communication and Capability Lead will capture The Data and Analytics Centre of Excellence  (DACE) narrative from the teams various activities to both communicate the value of our work and to ensure it is easily accessible to the wider business. In addition they will manage a DACE capability development programme to support the team and wider business’ Data and Analytics, understanding, growth and development 

The Communication and Capability lead has three key responsibilities:

1. Communication - Acting as a critical interface between DACE and the wider the business driving greater understanding of the value of our work  

2. Capability  -  Drive the development for the team and the wider business through a centralised programme of activities

3. Knowledge Management –  Accountable for ensuring that all data & analytics outputs are captured 

What I need to do


  • Create the DACE narrative from the teams various activities, ensuring  that the value of our work is fully understood by the business
  • Agitate the DACE team to explain and communicate the ‘art of the possible’ from a data and analytics perspective, creating demand in areas where there is potentially big value.
  • Grow and maintain strong business relationships
  • Accountable for the delivery of the DACE community activities e.g. D&A Community & Champions
  • DACE specific team communications (Newsletters, DACE periodic etc.)
  • Manage and maintain team portal (communication and knowledge)


  • Run the DACE Academy for the team and wider community, creating a centralised programme of activities
  • Work with DACE SLT and colleagues from the identification  of needs to delivery of events
  • Manage the capability and training budget
  • Provide an overview and regular update of events and capability status to the SLT and wider DACE community  
  • Provide engaging and where appropriate technical development opportunities for the wider business (Events, executive sessions etc.)
  • Resource speakers and presenters that challenge our thinking and approach

Knowledge Management

  • Create centralised portal for both internal colleagues and the wider business to access appropriate Data and Analytics information
  • Work with the delivery teams to capture all appropriate documentation in a format that is easy to understand both within DACE and for the business
  • Work with PM’s and DACE teams to understand the project being delivered and track them the various stages of delivery both from a communication and knowledge perspective

How I will succeed

  • By telling great stories with Data and Analytics
  • Able to distil complex technical delivery into easy to understand concept for the business
  • Manage a highly  complex stakeholder community
  • Recognised by the DACE team as the go to person for communication support and guidance
  • Successful communication of DACE’s strategy and ways of working both internally and to the wider business
  • Focus on identifying the business and commercial value in the work we are delivering and communicating it to the wider business
  • Work collaboratively with the other DACE teams to develop appropriate solutions

What I need to know

  • An understanding of the ‘art of the possible’ from a data and analytics perspective
  • A history of successfully delivering complex messages to senior stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • How to turn business speak in to data & analytics speak and vice versa
  • An effective networker with an ability to build robust relationships
  • Highly organised with excellent attention to detail
  • Experience in a variety of communications methods and in a leadership role
  • A ‘go to’ advisor on colleague comms
  • Evidence of creating and delivering a successful communication plans
  • A good commercial understanding  and awareness of the of the retail world
  • Experience in a variety of communications methods and in a leadership role

  • The ability to engage with and influence senior stakeholders
  • An ability to present at a senior level and to large teams
  • A good commercial understanding and how that relates to opportunities in data and analytics.
  • The passion, drive and commitment to succeed in a fast-moving, highly pressured environment
  • A proven track record of delivering.
  • Proficient at working under own initiative and taking responsibility for making decisions as required within an agreed framework.
