Data Quality Analyst

Summary of the Role’s Main Purpose

  • Maintain and improve the Quality of Sainsbury’s Customer Data
  • Subject Matter Expert for Sainsbury’s Customer Data, providing support to various departments and divisions – Marketing, Digital & Technology
  • Support on-going development and day to day maintenance of the single customer view

Principal Accountabilities

  • Responsible for ensuring the quality of Sainsbury’s Customer Data – accurate, timely updates
  • Managing periodic (weekly, monthly) processes for loading and transforming customer data from 3rd parties
  • Managing daily and ad-hoc data processing requests in a timely and accurate manner
  • Proactively monitoring data quality of incoming customer data and investigate poor data quality and data anomalies
  • Resolving customer and product data quality issues, and ensuring data quality initiatives deliver incremental improvements in data quality and customer contactability
  • Performing Steward Review Process to merge or retain suspected duplicate records

Measures of Success

  • Maintaining and exceeding agreed internal Data Quality standards & KPIs
  • Timely resolution of customer complaints and queries relating to customer data as per the SLAs
  • Daily Steward Review Tasks cleared down each day

  • Actioning data quality remediation activities
  • Merging suspected duplicate records and retaining the relevant information

Core Areas of Knowledge, Skills & Experience


  • Proven experience of SAS and/or SQL programming for complex data manipulation
  • Proven experience of working with large volumes of customer and transactional data
  • High level understanding of the Data Protection Act and Privacy & Electronic Communications Regulations and their application within consumer marketing
  • Ability to use MS Office applications: Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to work with proactively with minimal direction in a fast paced environment
  • Good networker with strong written and verbal communication skills


  • Marketing and/or data management related qualification (e.g. IDM  Award in Data Management)
  • Working experience of IBM Quality Stage & IBM MDM, or similar data matching and data quality tools (DataFlux, Informatica, Trillium)
  • Appreciation of direct marketing and insight, and the use of customer data in data driven marketing
  • Use of external data sources e.g. PAF, Acorn, Mosaic, Lifestyle & Electoral Roll
  • Experience of working within a retail environment
