Communications Manager - Argos

The Communications Manager is an integral member of the Argos Communications team and will lead on key campaigns and projects that communicate Argos’s strategy to deliver what customers want, when they want it.  

The role will have responsibility for supporting specific product categories, brands and workstreams and will also support the Senior Communications Manager in the development and delivery of broader Argos communications strategies.  It will involve consulting on issues management and media relations support when required.  The role will deputise for and report into the Senior Communications Manager (C5) and will have one direct report (Assistant Communications Manager C3). 

The role is suited to someone with strong consumer PR experience. The ideal candidate will have a proven record of overseeing and executing campaigns for big brands in a fast-paced environment, which deliver clear results and support broader business objectives. 

Principle accountabilities: 

  • Act as PR lead consulting internal stakeholders to determine strategic opportunities and develop PR plans which deliver effective results against KPIs
  • Support Senior Communications Manager with internal stakeholder management
  • Direct the team and manage agencies to deliver campaigns and plans
  • Work with the other Communications Manager (C4) to develop and own a sustained cross-category proactive press office outreach programme and solutions executed by the in-house team
  • Ensure all work streams are effectively measured and communicated against KPIs
  • Support the Senior Communications Manager on corporate and brand strategy and campaigns as required
  • Consult the business on reputational issues to mitigate risk and ensure effective reputation management
  • Draft press releases, statements, copy, quotes, Q&As and presentations where required
  • Support with media training where required
  • Build productive relationships with selected vertical and horizontal press contacts
  • Ensure opportunities for regional amplification are maximised (including Republic of Ireland)
  • Line manage Assistant Communications Manager (C3) to deliver against objectives / KPIs
  • Have an understanding of overall PR budget tracking and internal reporting
  • Manage specific campaign / project budgets to ensure cost-effectiveness and best use of resource
  • Ensure joined up communication with internal channels to amplify activity where relevant (including Marketing, Social Media, Internal Comms, Store Comms and Customer Services)
  • Support communications flow and team working across Argos and Sainsbury’s Corporate Affairs teams to maximise other PR opportunities
  • Participation in out-of-hours press office rota 

Measure of success: 

  • Projects are well managed with good lead-time and timelines to deliver against media KPIs
  • Works efficiently and effectively with agencies to manage deadlines, workloads and deliverables
  • Proactively drives KPIs, project reviews and best practice
  • Strong standard of results, focused on quality coverage in target titles
  • Mitigates risks associated with reputational issues 

Core Areas of Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Solid experience working in consumer PR with large consumer brands
  • Ideally experience of working with retail brands (non-food)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong project manager – detailed focused approach to reporting, budgets and timeline management
  • Able to work to tight deadlines across several projects
  • Rigorous with strong attention to detail
  • Proven track record of working with key messages and KPI delivery
  • Strong media contacts and media relations experience
  • Self-starter – highly motivated
  • Solutions orientated – positive and results-focused
  • Good presentation skills – PowerPoint and gravitas
  • Interest in the media, new media, and innovation in PR techniques
