Confectionery Buyer

In a nutshell

To source and buy products at the best cost and ensure customer satisfaction through great quality, availability and merchandising, to deliver the budget within the framework of the Corporate Goal
and the Corporate Responsibility agenda.

What I need to do

Category Knowledge
• Be the commercial expert for a category (group of products) in relation to customers, products, supply base, and competitor position (retailer and brand)
• Own the supplier relationship from production to customer, using Supplier Plans to achieve goals and targets

Buying for Less

• Be accountable for profit and loss
• Negotiate cost of goods and reduce costs throughout the value chain

Selling Activities

• Own the category price and promotional strategy and ensure adherence to corporate price and promotions guidelines
• Work alongside the product development and technical team to land successful product innovation and improvements
• Create and own the product master assortment and optimise trading intensities by working with the Category Range Planner to agree the distributions of products and ranges
• Implement the customer elements of the Category Plan and Corporate Events to improve customer satisfaction

Planning Activities

• Comply with the delivery timetable for pricing, promotions and marketing events
• Develop and take accountability for Category Plans, Supplier Plans and category events
• Undertake before and after activity analysis to inform the wider team of commercial success and failures

Buyer Routines

• Daily and weekly routines are numerous and it is the buyer’s role to be the hands on influencing the team. They include:
- Ensuring adequate time and focus is applied to systems and administrative routines to ensure right first time execution in store and fulfil our obligations to the Grocery Supplier Code of Practice.
- Creating a personal development plan (PDP) in consultation with the Buying Manager.

• Delivery of sales budget and market share growth
• Delivery gross profit budget (£ and %) and cost of goods savings in line with Supplier Plan targets
• Availability and waste within budget
• Successful and timely implementation of Category Plans
• Timely and profitable new product development
• Retail prices managed to price rule set

• Category Assistant providing administrative support
• Range Planner and Category Planner team support to deliver Category Plans
• Cross-functional category support from Supply Chain, Product Development and Product Technical
• Line management support from Buying Manager
