In a nutshell

To input into and support the Buyer in executing the strategy for a given group of products within a category and delivering optimum cost through effective negotiation and supplier Management.

What I need to do

• To execute the sourcing and selection strategy for a given group of products in conjunction with cross functional disciplines
• Responsible for range optimisation: opportunities to maximise margin through product configuration, placement, dressing opportunities, range and space trading intensities
• To understand the in-store experience and impact the product ranges have on customers and store colleagues in order to inform future decisions.
• Contribution to team objective of achieving optimum cost through effective negotiation and supplier management.
• Understanding of sales & profit variables and use of relevant levers to trade effectively. e.g. Product placement, positioning, price, promotions, POS (point of sale) and PR.
• Accountable for adherence to the buying milestones within the agreed critical path.
• To have customer / competitor awareness in your range through competitor shopping in order to inform decision making and implement buying levers appropriately.
• Demonstrate high levels of process compliance and data integrity.
• Support and input into team objective to build a commercial, customer focused range through competitor bench marking and trend direction in line with agreed corporate compliance requirements (including legal, ethical and quality measures).
• To have responsibility for administrative duties and approvals, sample management, packaging sign off, product and promotional set up, supplier and internal administration, overseeing work of the BAA where applicable.
• Responsible for recommending and inputting into to Planograms, Pricing, Promotional activity, Product specification, Supplier selection (and de-listing) as appropriate to the product area
• To support the Buyer in liaising with the Product Technologist in setting the quality criteria for own label products ensuring the optimal balance between quality and price is maintained.
• To confirm product detail and administration post sign off to suppliers in line with the critical path, overseeing work of the BAA where applicable.
• Provide great customer service to store colleagues through speedy resolution of queries
• Coach the BAA on the department
• Ensure team activity is legal and compliant, and ensure trained to understand my obligations under competition law and ethical training

What I need to know

• Interest in commercial issues, previous Buying experience preferred
• Passion for product, balanced with understanding need for commercial acumen
• Demonstrable knowledge of business principles, Sainsbury’s values
• Good at building positive relationships and team working
• Strong analytical & numerical skills
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to coach junior members of staff, particularly with business processes, tools and systems
• Excellent admin and organisational ability
