Buyer - Papershop - (12 month FTC)

In a nutshell

To execute the sourcing and selection strategy for a given product range, owning and supporting the delivery of agreed target KPIs in line with the department strategy. To achieve optimum cost through effective negotiation, supplier management and identification of the most cost effective sourcing routes. To act as a coach and leader by managing, motivating and developing the Buying team.

What I need to do

  • To define and execute the sourcing and selection strategy for a given group of products to deliver great products at fair prices to customers.
  • To achieve optimum product cost through effective negotiation with suppliers.
  • To comply with buying milestones in the critical path to ensure range launch timescales are met.
  • In conjunction with the Merchandiser, develop and implement joint business plans with suppliers in line with department strategy and set specific performance targets for suppliers.
  • Ensure agreed levels of good, better and best products are bought in line with the department strategy.
  • To manage KPI’s through Pricing, Promotion & Ranging, within agreed Non-Food strategic framework.
  • To work in partnership with Merchandising teams to deliver product ranges within agreed stock parameters to ensure availability targets are met.
  • To liaise with global suppliers and sourcing offices to identify the most cost effective suppliers and to support overseas teams with own label product development. 
  • To work with the category Head of Buying & Buying Manager to identify future commercial opportunities.
  • Understand and contribute towards brand and product handwriting through working with Design teams for own brand products.
  • Work with the merchandising team to review weekly trading performance on KPIs and to identify any issues and opportunities to respond to weekly trading conditions.
  • To liaise with the Product technologist in setting the quality criteria for own label products ensuring the optimal balance between quality and price is maintained.
  • To liaise with marketing teams to assist in driving sales.
  • In conjunction with the Merchandiser, responsible for liaison and working alongside Visual Merchandisers/ Range planners to deliver a cohesive range in store.
  • Regularly visit stores and liaise with the Visual Merchandising/Range planning teams and where necessary with the Retail field team and in store colleagues to continuously improve the shopping experience for customers. 
  • To undertake competitor benchmarking and regularly assess price architecture.
  • Ensure team activity is legal and compliant, and that all team members are trained to understand their obligations under competition law and ethical training
  • To act as a coach and leader by managing, motivating and developing the team, regularly assessing individuals’ performance and giving feedback where appropriate.
  • Embracing change - taking a proactive approach to supporting adoption of new ways of working in Non-food and role modelling the Sainsbury’s values.

What I need to know

  • Strong commercial awareness and previous Buying experience, preferably within a Non-food Omni-channel environment 
  • Proven track record of delivering results to targets as an individual and within a team 
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast moving dynamic retail environment
  • Confidence to influence and engage at all levels
  • Effective communicator, presenter, and team player
  • Relevant technical experience for given product range
  • Experience of working with suppliers on a FOB & domestic basis
  • Product, market and consumer knowledge
