Depot Commercial Finance Manager

In a nutshell

Business partner to the General Manager to prepare and deliver the depot budget and contribute to the overall regional cost strategy. Provides advice, challenge and coaching to the Depot teams on all financial matters to ensure that financial targets are achieved and Depot risks are managed. Ensures that adequate financial controls are in place to support the site, and provides leadership and development for the site based finance teams. On site financial lead for project work

What I need to do

1. Support the Depot leadership team in delivering the business and financial plans, provide day to day business partnering to the GM.
2. Key contact for the RFM to cover all aspects of financial reporting or analysis at the site.
3. Day to day involvement in depot planning processes and decision making.
4. Ongoing financial management of the site opex and capital requirements, re-forecasting performance expectations to reflect current operational patterns. Actively engage with other site commercial managers to share best practice.
5. Responsible for the preparation and submission of the Budget, Q2F and weekly flash in line with corporate requirements
6. Lead the finance team in order to deliver best in class financial processes, providing development and coaching for the on-site teams
7. Accountable for all elements of routine financial reporting, ensuring that this is completed accurately and on time. Likewise the production of Ad Hoc reports are required.
8. Identify site level cost saving opportunities, works with the RFM to ensure that these are fully understood and implemented where appropriate.
9. Provides commercial advice and challenge for business projects, prepare necessary business cases and PIR documents.
10. Champion the production, analysis and communication of site level KPI’s throughout the business. Recommend improvements to drive enhanced performance.
11. Review the financial performance of third party on-site providers (e.g. RRU, VMU) to ensure KPI’s are delivered. Validates business cases for any new providers.
12. Sign off of expenses and purchase orders in accordance with company policy providing appropriate challenge as required.

How I will succeed

  • Delivery of the depot budget (up to £70M) & improvement plans against a framework of ‘no surprises’
  • Rigorous analysis of site performance, timely accurate production of weekly/ periodic accounts and provision of robust and insightful financial information
  • Ensure that adequate financial controls are in place at all times
  • Provide solid financial support and challenge to all project work, prepare required business cases and PIR’s
  • Adherence to corporate finance policies and processes
  • Delivery of department people plan

What I need to know


  • ACA/CIMA/ACCA qualification or equivalent with relevant post qualification experience in a commercial role
  • Strong financial acumen, proven challenging, influencing and negotiating skills.
  • Ability to combine strategic and analytical perspectives with a pragmatic approach to delivery
  • Experience of financial management and control processes, detailed understanding of forecasting, budgeting and cost control.
