In a nutshell

Sainsbury’s is a data rich business – with information collected from consumers, suppliers and colleagues. We believe that there is huge value in these data in driving value for our customers and, in turn, value for our shareholders.

This role will, in a nutshell, drive and deliver Data Quality improvements to make great quality, well understood data available to the people that can then drive analytics and insights into the business.

The role will involve working across a mix of traditional RDBMS, Big Data, Digital and new open source platforms with a range of tools and technologies.

The fundamental principle is that data is a corporate asset and, as such, we need to manage and govern it in a way which creates value from that asset.

What I need to do

  • Work to continuously improve the data quality within the organisation across all data types, commercial, customer and colleague, with a focus on value
  • Be able to measure improvements in quality and identify the value that delivers
  • Triage data quality issues, understand impact and importance and prioritise workload to address
  • Ensure data quality issues are addressed at source and work with relevant owners to drive through necessary actions
  • Monitor and maintaining accuracy, alignment and quality in a pro-active manner – embed pro-active data quality profiling in key source areas
  • Help the process to embed data quality by design in the development process including source data profiling
  • Utilise data lineage to understand downstream impacts of data quality issues and ensure pro-active altering is in place for end users
  • Have the flexibility to work in a standard approach as well as supporting rapid discovery, prototyping and data science
  • Help design the operating model for the data quality team
  • Use data ownership and stewardship community to drive appropriate data quality improvements
  • Help implement data quality management framework, processes, principles and standards
  • Manage and help create appropriate artefacts
  • Support the implementation of the appropriate toolsets and applications
  • Prioritise work, manage time effectively and complete tasks within agreed timeframes
  • Identify, undertake root cause analysis and addressing real and perceived issues with data quality

How I will succeed

  • Be a great team player
  • Fix data quality issues
  • Developing a great relationship with owners, stewards, peers and D&T (IT)
  • Be a great communicator and advocate of the benefits of great data quality
  • Have the ability to manage senior stakeholders, create alignment and broker solutions
  • Bring groups of people together from across the organisation to address issues
  • Being focussed on driving value back into the business through pro-active improvements
  • Managing a complex mix of work within tight timescales
  • Be seen to be the ‘can-do’ enabler for the user community
  • Be a subject matter expert of all things data quality across traditional, open source, digital and cloud based environments
  • Develop and utilise your existing network outside and/or within the organisation to share, learn, develop new and enhance existing capabilities – encourage your team to do the same
  • Strive to become a luminary in data quality

What I need to know

  • Strong knowledge of the tools, technologies, skills and processes required to deliver a great data quality capability
  • Good SQL skills
  • Understanding of design and development of data stores, digital solutions and data warehouses and associated toolsets.
  • How to utilise ownership and stewardship models to drive through improvements
  • Data and information management lifecycles
  • Knowledge and use of data quality toolsets, methodologies and process
  • How to undertake triage, root cause analysis and resolution
  • A broad understanding of the applications of data from reporting through to data science

What I need to show

  • Previous use of enterprise Data Quality toolsets and processes
  • The ability to influence stakeholders through great communication and relationship development skills – Get them to own data quality issues and support resolution
  • The ability to bring a group of people together, facilitate workshops, identify and drive through clear ownership and action
  • Good technical data quality skills and the drive to improve them
  • Pro-active, self-starter attitude – ability to manage own workload
  • The desire and suggestions of how to improve what we do and how we do it

Resources available to me

  • People – an appropriately sized and skilled team (approx. 5) including a line manager to assist with your development
  • Toolsets – a set of existing capabilities that can be supplemented and enhanced as required
  • A wholly engaged business – keen to have ‘data sorted’ and equally keen to help
  • A strong in flight programme of toolset implementation

What decisions I can make
