Information Architect

In a nutshell

Sainsbury’s is a data rich business – with information collected from consumers, suppliers and colleagues.  We believe that there is huge value in these data in driving value for our customers and, in turn, value for our shareholders.

This role will, in a nutshell, implement Information Architecture with associated ontology, artefacts, processes, standards and principles, ultimately to make great quality, well understood data available for reporting, analysis and insights.

The fundamental principle is that data is a corporate asset and, as such, we need to manage and govern it in a way which creates value from that asset.

What I need to do

  • Triage new requirements, provide impact assessments and provide appropriate estimates for amending data models
  • Provide the necessary direction and support for the data modelling team
  • Develop and enhance business conceptual, logical and physical data models in line with new requirements
  • Develop and enhance the Information Architecture framework for the Data and Analytics centre of excellence (DACE)
  • Identify and/or enhance appropriate ontology (TOGAF or other), artefacts, toolsets, processes, principles and standards
  • Enhance the Business Information Model, be its custodian and drive alignment as appropriate
  • Be part of the team that defines and designs the end state solutions for information in DACE
  • Help develop and implement data by design into the company change process
  • Work with data management teams on the implementation of a new Data Dictionary
  • Balance resources between core strategic capability development and commercial solutions
  • Where appropriate, enable the de-commissioning of legacy data environments and associated data and information models
  • Create a great working relationship with all those involved in end to end solution design and development
  • Define and own modelling from a conceptual and logical perspective on a day to day basis
  • Align information architecture with business and technical architecture
  • Ensure solution designs and data models developed within DACE meet appropriate standards and principles
  • Creation of solutions that meet business needs and move towards end state architecture
  • Prioritise and manage workload and time to deliver tasks to agreed deadlines
  • Ensure data models at all levels are documented, communicated, updated and centrally managed in an appropriate manner

How I will succeed

  • Work as a pro-active team member
  • Developing a great relationship with D&T (IT), peers, architects and the end user community
  • Help create great, practical solutions
  • Understand the benefits of iterative solutions and minimum viable products
  • Being focussed on driving value back into the business and an enabler for the user community
  • Be a subject matter expert of all things Information Architecture.
  • Strive to become a luminary in Enterprise Information Architecture
  • Develop and utilise your existing network within and outside of the open source community to share, learn, develop new and enhance existing capabilities.

What I need to know

  • Clearly a detailed knowledge of the frameworks, tools, technologies, skills and processes required to deliver a complete Information Architecture for the team
  • How information flows around a business, ideally with previous retail and digital experience
  • Detailed understanding of design and development of data stores and data warehouses and associated toolsets.
  • Experience using and developing the Teradata Retail Data Model a bonus
  • How to optimise solutions for best performance in line with end user needs and use cases
  • Excellent knowledge and use of conceptual, logical and physical, data modelling, ontology and solution design toolsets, methodologies and processes
  • Knowledge and experience working with of big-data, digital and open source capabilities technologies as well as more traditional solutions
  • An understanding of information architecture in the cloud and the services available. Experience in a hybrid of on-prem and cloud is a plus
  • A detailed understanding of how to turn business requirements into information and data models
  • A broad understanding of the applications of data from operational use, reporting through to data science

What I need to show

  • Exemplary and inspiring Information Architecture skills
  • Strong documentation and artefact management
  • Good communication and stakeholder management skills
  • The passion, drive and commitment to succeed in a fast-moving, highly pressured environment
  • A proven track record of designing and implementing frameworks in a large scale, complex business.

Resources available to me

  • People – an appropriately sized and skilled team working in a matrix model
  • Toolsets – A mix of existing capabilities that can be enhanced and new toolsets being implemented
  • Data Models – An existing retail industry standard data model
  • A wholly engaged business – keen to have ‘data sorted’ and equally keen to help
  • The access to appropriate third party resources

What decisions I can make

  • Data model design at all levels
  • Which frameworks, principles and processes to implement
  • How to prioritise and effectively manage time and deliveries
  • Target operating model
  • Toolsets and ontology
