Concept Graphic Design Manager

In a nutshell

As the Concept Graphic Design Manager you will support the creative direction for new retail concepts across all format types for Sainsbury’s. You will work on a wide range of projects and your responsibilities will cover all aspects from design insight, through brief and design/art direction, to Design Intent across all permanent aspects of Instore Communications. The knowledge and experience you have gained will allow you to develop Brand Comms concepts that improve the shopping experience for customers within our stores. The role is responsible for developing a clear articulation of our Brand in store, and providing clear principles and guidelines for its delivery through internal and external production teams. You will be responsible for the management of external design agencies, specialists and suppliers to deliver creative design solutions that set the future direction for the execution of our brand in store.

What I need to do

  • Create and develop compelling design briefs that demonstrate a thorough understanding of the project objectives, and create clarity of all deliverables for Agencies and Suppliers
  • Manage and direct Agencies and Suppliers throughout the whole Design process, ensuring regular feedback and appraisal of outputs at all stages of development
  • Champion innovation in driving change based on research and insight
  • Manage a wide range of diverse projects to deliver on time and to budget, ensuring a high level of quality that is in line with our Brand Standards
  • Communicate weekly updates to the Head of Store Design as well as regular project updates to stakeholders across the Sainsbury’s support centre
  • Deliver Communication Principles and developed Brand assets to the Design Delivery teams, ensuring absolute understanding of all key requirements and design direction
  • Provide design support and advice throughout the Design Delivery process, ensuring that the creative vision is delivered in the in store concept
  • Manage project specific budgets for external agencies, ensuring the delivery of the best value for Sainsbury’s
  • Develop and communicate insight into Agency and Supplier capability and identify opportunities for new technologies and ways of working

How I will succeed

  • The delivery of commercially successful retail design concepts
  • Design concepts are recognised as ‘best in class’ in the outside world
  • Great communication will ensure that Stakeholders are clear at all times on project status and milestones
  • Providing great guidance and direction to Design delivery managers, so that they are clear on all aspects of Design direction and Brand assets for each project
  • Providing successful deputisation to the Head of Store Design as required
  • Understanding of retail design and broader design trends and direction, and it’s active use in delivering projects
  • Cost-effective management of external agencies and suppliers and agreed budgets

What I need to know

  • Extensive knowledge of creative Retail design trends and best practice
  • Ideally experience of working both Agency and Client side within the design industry
  • A proven track record of success in the delivery of retail environments, to agreed timelines and within agreed budgets, and great Project Management skills
  • Experience of working in a fast-paced organisation and the delivery of Change Projects at speed
  • Proven track record of influencing Senior stakeholders and Clients
  • An extensive knowledge of Creative suite, including In-design, illustrator, photoshop and an extensive knowledge of production methods/processes
  • An understanding of current digital programs and processes.
  • An understanding of our customers and their needs in store

  • The ability to develop creative design solutions, with judgement applied to any recommendations and rationales
  • Ability to manage multiple projects of varying scales at one time
  • The skill to bring to life Design concepts that excite and engage teams
  • The creative application of our Design principles and Brand guidelines
  • A strategic thinker with a strong understanding of customers, particularly within the context of retail environments
  • Can demonstrate influence and judgement and the ability to present and interpret information at Senior Management Level, and across peers within the Commercial, Retail and Marketing divisions
  • Strong network of external design resources and appropriate Specialist Suppliers
