Assessment Specialist (Talent & Performance)

Why do people keep coming back to Sainsbury’s? It’s not just our great products. It’s our great people, too. That’s why we source them very carefully, to ensure we can keep providing the high quality services and solutions that make us one of Britain’s biggest and best-loved brands.

And that’s why our Assessment specialism is so important. Join us and you’ll shape the tools to help recruit the best talent around, to be the best for our customers.

You’ll bring your expertise to an autonomous role that combines strategic planning with being hands-on to carry out assessments. Working in partnership with resourcing and talent teams to understand assessment and selection needs across the business, you’ll create assessment materials and processes for both recruitment and talent development.

With an eye on colleague assessment across the business, you’ll ensure that we maintain an inclusive process that allows each area of the business to reflect the communities our customers come from. You’ll also take ownership of our executive leadership assessment process.

You don’t have to be a qualified Chartered Psychologist to join us in this role, but you will need a deep knowledge of assessment and selection. Whether you’re from an in-house or supplier background, you should have expertise in psychometric tools and testing - ideally gained while working in or with a large organisation.

Your broad remit will cover Sainsbury’s, Sainsbury’s Bank and the imminent integration of Argos with our business.  As we move into this exciting new phase of growth, our aim is to move from competency-based assessment to a strengths-based approach, and you’ll play a big part in driving this change of direction. It’s a fantastic opportunity to reshape assessment and see the impact of your work across the whole business.

The role

  • Creating an assessment strategy for Sainsbury’s, to include retail, SSC, logistics, Sainsbury’s Bank and Sainsbury’s-Argos, and work with the Resourcing Manager to implement a group-wide approach.
  • Reviewing, researching, designing and implementing the most appropriate assessment tools for roles across the business, including high volume and hard-to-fill vacancies at all levels.
  • Ensuring that assessment tools are used appropriately, normed and adapted to organisational needs.
  • Reviewing the assessment process for SSC roles, and designing and implementing a solution to move from competency based to strengths-based interviewing.
  • Producing evaluation reports and decision-making papers showing how assessment and development processes are impacting on key indicators, candidate and hiring manager experience, diversity and turnover.
  • Conducting detailed leadership profiling to support selection, promotion and development.
  • Carrying out training needs analysis for assessment skills and proactively developing and delivering relevant workshops across the group.
  • Designing and implementing assessment and development centres for different purposes.

The experience and skills

  • BPS Level A and B accredited (Psychometric Test Training).
  • Trained to interpret SHL.
  • Experience of working in an occupational setting in a large corporate environment working on high volume recruitment and development.
  • Significant experience designing and conducting assessment and development centres.
  • Experience of making ROI through the application of psychological approaches and techniques, in terms of turnover, engagement and recruitment cost/time.
  • Experience of creating strengths-based assessment tools, and of facilitating workshops.
  • Ability to think strategically combined with a practical approach to execution.
  • Understanding of the D&I agenda.
  • A high level of impact and influence, with tenacity to resolve issues.
