Central Transport Team Manager

In a nutshell

To manage the day to day operations of the Central Transport team based in Daventry and create operational efficiencies within the department and the wider Sainsbury’s Transport network in order to optimise performance and revenue. The role holder will be responsible for the management of their direct reports to ensure delivery of the best possible service to our stores, depots and external customers in line with our service level agreements. The role holder will also provide first line management for their direct reports in accordance with company policy.

What I need to do

I deliver operational excellence:

      • Take ownership to ensure that the daily transport plans are delivered, sourcing transport solutions from depots and third parties to resource around 3,400 loads per week. Nearly 900 of these loads per week are resourced with third parties at a cost of approx. £12 million per annum.
      • Allocate workload within the department to ensure we meet our service level agreements and reports are issued on time and to standard.
      • Responsible for providing detailed updates and handovers to the senior management team on a daily basis.
      • Accountable for the delivery of the backhaul plan, ensuring revenue recovery of approx. £45 million per annum.

I am a trusted and engaging leader:

      • Lead the team during a shift by supporting and coaching the colleagues and being accountable for problem resolution to ensure all work is completed accurately and to the required deadlines.
      • Deputise for C5 Central Transport Operations Manager as required.

I am a commercial business manager:

      • Negotiate rates with hauliers for ad-hoc haulage requests
      • Supervision of accurate and timely completion and communication of weekly and periodic financial reporting to all stakeholders.

I make decisions that put ‘customers’ at the heart of everything I do:

      • Monitor haulier KPIs and challenge inadequate performance.
      • Influence and manage expectations of depots, suppliers and internal stakeholders to ensure a high service level at the best possible cost.

I positively lead change:

      • Identify and implement operational efficiencies within the department and the wider Sainsbury’s transport network to optimise performance and revenue creation.

I deliver the logistics people plan:

    • To provide first line management, coaching and support for direct reports in accordance with company policy.
    • Responsible for day to day people management and development of direct reports to build capability.

How I will succeed

Backhaul and depot transport plans completed accurately by 14:00 daily.

Financial summary tasks completed accurately to required deadlines.

Performance against targets set out in a personal development plan

Feedback received from line manager, direct reports and internal and external colleagues

Achievement of divisional targets

What I need to know

Excellent attention to detail with good reporting and analytical skills.

Ability to communicate and influence effectively at all levels.

Intermediate capability with Microsoft Excel.

Line management experience with ability to lead and coach direct reports in line with our values & polices.

Operational experience in warehousing and/or transport.   

Process driven with good organisational and communication skills.
