Co-opted Board Committee Members

Sheffield Students’ Union is powered by students to make life better.  The Board of Trustees leads our work in representing, supporting and enhancing the lives of our students.  To do this better, Trustees are looking for additional diversity and expertise on our five board committees to strengthen their work. We are seeking  between 5 and 8 new committee members to join these committees with experience in a range of areas described below.

Sheffield Students' Union places great importance on our equality, diversity and inclusion policy. Currently Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups are underrepresented and we are particularly interested in increasing their representation in our governance.

Being a co-opted committee member is extremely rewarding.  Confident and diplomatic, you will be an independent voice bringing valuable expertise to the Students’ Union and helping us make the best decisions for our members. You will bring knowledge and experience in the following areas helping to shape our wide range of activities at a strategic level in a dynamic, forward-thinking organisation.

  • Audit/Finance/Accounting
  • Risk management
  • Legal expertise
  • Safeguarding
  • People Development
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Employee Relations
  • Charity/Corporate Governance
  • Strategic and organisational development
  • Research and impact measuring
  • Retail, food and drink trading business development
  • Postgraduate and mature student experience

Board Committees meet between two and four times per year, usually during the week and in office hours.  The roles are unpaid but reasonable expenses will be met; induction and training is provided. Terms of office are for two years, with an opportunity to serve a further term.

If you feel you can contribute to a democratic, values-driven, large charity with an ambitious strategic plan and a commitment to transforming lives, we will be delighted to hear from you.

You can read more about our organisation here.

If you would like an informal discussion about these opportunities, please telephone Kathryne Fraser, Deputy Director of Membership Engagement on 0114 222 8520 or email
