Premises Officer

Sightsavers is looking for a Premises Officer – a vital role which promotes a positive health, safety and environmental culture within our organisation

Salary: £33,000 per annum

Location: Haywards Heath, West Sussex - Office based with some home working

Contract: Permanent

Hours: This is a full-time role with some home working (subject to change as required)

Sightsavers is an international development charity that works with partners in developing countries to treat and prevent avoidable blindness and promote equality for people with visual impairments and other disabilities. Our UK offices are in a shared office building with its own main reception in central Haywards Heath. We are close to the A23, mainline rail station, multiple bus routes and have lots of parking options.

About the role

We are looking for a Premises Officer to work collaboratively with other members of the Corporate Services and wider Sightsavers staff to plan and implement preventative safety measures and ensure the UK office adheres to all Health and Safety legislation. Additionally, you will be working with our Senior HR Business Partners and overseas offices to support improved Health and Safety across our international organisation.

The Premises Officer handles and monitors all relevant Health and Safety legislation; ensuring policies within the UK office continue to meet legal compliance, overseeing the implementation of policies, and educating employees on Health and Safety matters. In this key role, you will ensure the UK office is maintained to a high standard by proactively working with contractors and building management. You will also produce annual forecasts for premises costs and take ownership of ad hoc projects. Currently our recently refurbished Haywards Heath offices UK office are open to staff three days per week: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This role will require being present in the office for at least these three days each week with Monday and Friday spent working from home. This is subject to change and more days in the office may be needed to meet with tradespeople and suppliers or for staff meetings. There may also be occasional out of hours / weekend working which is paid as overtime.

The Premises Officer takes responsibility for unlocking the offices on ‘open days’ in the morning between 7:30am – 8:00am and can leave at 3:30pm once the post has been collected. There can be some flexibility around hours worked on ‘working from home’ days but typically these are 9:00am to 5:00pm. This is a varied role which has also had to adapt to supporting staff working remotely. Please note that manual handling will form part of this role, and this could include taking delivery of bulky items, light office removals and ad hoc maintenance duties. Please see the job description for further details.

About you

We are looking for a proactive individual who has facilities experience and a positive approach. You will need excellent communication skills and whilst a recognised health and safety qualification such as the NEBOSH National General Certificate would be helpful, if you do not currently hold it, we will pay for you to achieve it. You will enjoy being kept busy – there is plenty to do in this role - and being part of an organisation with a shared vision.

This is an ideal opportunity to gain experience working within an international organisation and to manage a diverse workload. To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • a good grounding in health and safety with awareness of compliance regulations and record management requirements
  • a problem-solving approach
  • great attention to detail – from record keeping for audits through to meticulous office maintenance standards
  • the ability to juggle multiple requests
  • strong Microsoft Office skills
  • the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information

As an equal opportunity employer, we actively encourage applications from all sections of the community. Sightsavers is a Disability Confident Leader and qualified people living with a disability are particularly encouraged to apply.

Sightsavers offers some fantastic benefits. Our comprehensive benefits package includes generous annual leave allowance, pension, season ticket loan, cycle to work scheme, discounted gym memberships and wellness discounts.
