The Kickstart Green Team programme is a 6 month long, paid role. However, it is much more than a basic job, we will help you to become more attractive to future employers. We have structured the programme to develop practical garden skills and transferable skills so you are work ready after a 6-month period.
You will be supported as part of a Green Team to carry out a wide range of garden maintenance tasks such as weeding, planting, pruning, mowing and hedge cutting. We are also hoping to develop your skills through projects at our properties, this may include turfing, paving, construction of raised beds and decking areas, subject to final designs.
We have two Green Teams;
One based in Darlington at Lingfield Point, DL1 1RW,
One in Welwyn Garden City at Woodhall Community Centre, AL7 3XD.
As an SJOG Green Team employee you will be expected to:-
You will need to attend scheduled sessions, complete theory and practical tasks, complete homework and be flexible. You will travel to and from sites as needed, in work transport will be provided. On occasions, you may need to find your own transport to locations but this would be discussed in advance.
You will be required to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service check to ensure you are suitable to work around vulnerable individuals. SJOG takes a supportive, positive approach to previous offending and treats people on a case by case basis, do not let an offending history prevent you from applying. We will all need to abide by Covid guidelines as they emerge.
Previous experience is not required, we are looking for people with a positive attitude, a willingness to work hard, and work to a high standard with support and training. Simply put, we can teach you skills and knowledge but we can’t teach attitude.
We require a basic level of literacy and numeracy.
Friendly, approachable, experienced and knowledgeable staff will support you throughout your time at SJOG, helping you to learn new skills and build on ones you already have. The SJOG staff who support trainees are highly experienced in supporting people with practical tasks and qualifications. We understand the challenges many people face and will do our best to support you with any you may experience.
We will support you to work towards an ASDAN Horticultural Certificate. ASDAN is an awarding organisation whose curriculum programmes and qualifications help people develop knowledge and skills for learning, work and life. You will be trained in the use of tools, horticultural techniques and approaches.
Alongside this we will run a range of activities around increasing your employability skills and chances of finding employment in the future.
This will include activities such as supported e-learning courses, developing and improving your CV and interview skills.
We will also work with you to increase your knowledge of the workplace including Employment Rights, Health and Safety and the role of various parts of SJOG, such as Human Resources and Finance.
The classroom based work will be a blend of presentations, worksheets, group activities, and guest speakers in order to keep the sessions informative and engaging.
You will study and complete a work record book that will be used to record your reflections, self-assessments, achievements and successes.
