Passenger Carrying Vehicle Driver Job Description



Main purpose of job:


To drive Passenger Carrying Vehicles and transport passengers in a safe, skilled and comfortable manner and in accordance with the Company’s routes and schedules.




  1. To carry out all duties in a safe and efficient manner.
  2. To drive vehicles and use Company equipment with due care and attention.
  3. To provide a high standard of customer service.
  4. To wear the Company uniform provided and maintain a smart and tidy appearance when on duty in accordance with Company Dress Code.
  5. To ensure compliance with Company procedures and regulations and relevant legislation e.g. Road Traffic Act, Health & Safety at Work Act etc.
  6. To operate pre-determined routes on time in accordance with relevant duty rosters and schedules.
  7. To stop for intending passengers to board or alight where indicated either at official bus stops or by request on “Hail & Ride” sections of route only.
  8. To control passenger loadings and ensure the legal capacities are not exceeded.
  9. To treat passengers in a helpful, polite and professional manner.
  10. To input fare information into the ticket machine, correctly issue tickets, record passes and return tickets and give change where necessary.
  11. To check the validity of travel cards, tickets and passes and to withdraw those suspected to be invalid where safe to do so.
  12. To ensure that all cash taken is paid in to the Company in accordance with Company procedures.
  13. To deploy the on bus wheelchair ramp (where fitted) when requested for use by disabled passengers.
  14. To follow Company procedures for breakdowns, accidents and emergencies.
  15. To carry out a comprehensive safety check of the vehicle and complete the Vehicle Defect Report Card in accordance with the Company procedures.
  16. To be fully conversant with any Company vehicle required to be driven on receipt of relevant training.
  17. To check vehicles for lost property and hand in any such items to the appropriate member of staff in accordance with Company procedures.
  18. To set destination blinds to ensure that the correct destination is displayed and legible.
  19. To conform to all rules and regulations as laid down in the Road Traffic Act and in Company procedures, and to observe any Road Traffic Conditions which may apply.
  20. To follow the instructions of Company Official and Police Officers.









Passenger Carrying Vehicle Driver Person Specification



This document describes the skills and attributes necessary to be able to carry out the job of a PCV Driver for Stagecoach.


To be successful in your application you must have all the attributes listed in the “essential” column. Those attributes listed in the “desirable” column are not essential requirements but are considered very useful to have.

Basic numeracy – able to add and subtract in order to handle fares correctly.


Basic literacy – able to read and write in order to follow timetables, fare tables and instructions.

Experienced in cash handling.


Held a full licence for at least 1 year.


No more than 3 points on licence, no bans of any type within previous 5 years, no drink/driving ban within previous 10 years or any bans not spent under Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.


Regularly driven a vehicle in the past 12 months.

PCV licence.


Clean driving licence.


Worked as a driver.

Customer skills

Able to deal with people in a friendly and helpful manner.


Able to deal with difficult situations in a calm, non-confrontational manner.

Customer service experience.


Demonstrates clear verbal communication – both in speaking to and understanding others.





Able to demonstrate a stable work history with evidence of attending regularly and on time.





Clean, tidy and well groomed.






Able to work all relevant shifts.


Must live within easily commutable distance from the depot.

Worked shifts previously.


Own transport to travel to work.


Able to pass PCV medical including drugs and alcohol test.

You must not exceed 18 Stone in weight fully clothed.
