An exciting volunteer management role to deliver our volunteer strategy to grow, expand and engage volunteering for the best volunteer experience that makes the greatest positive impact for people affected by cancer.

The Volunteer Development Manager job:

As our specialist lead you’ll be championing and representing volunteering making sure a key strategic aim is delivered in this area of our work.

Taking the lead when it comes to growing our volunteer numbers, engaging volunteering across the organisation and empowering volunteers makes this a key role in our work and furthering our presence and reputation in the voluntary sector.

It’s an important job in bringing our volunteer strategy to life. You’ll be responsible for exploring and building external and internal partnership working and sponsorship opportunities that support volunteer success, development and empowerment.

It’s also all about the celebration, recognition and giving thanks to our volunteers so their volunteer experience is meaningful, equal and inclusive. And, making sure people are supported to achieve their goals through our strategy and our volunteer policies and processes are embedded and fit for purpose.

Much of the job is about effective communication and keeping up to date  with changes and developments in the external voluntary sector. You’ll represent the organisation in sector working groups, promote volunteering through delivering presentations, training, talks and engagement opportunities and make sure our policies and procedures are effective and relevant.

Line managing a team and how you go about collaborating and working with other colleagues at all levels, problem solving, negotiating and networking means this is a busy and public facing role involving home and office working and regularly being out across our Welsh communities.

In this Volunteer Development manager job you can expect to be doing things like:

  • Line managing staff and supervising a team of volunteers
  • Making sure other volunteer managers are supported in developing their own volunteer teams and the value of volunteer contribution is understood and engaged with
  • Preparing cultivation plans across teams and departments and making sure our policies and processes are fit for purpose and embedded
  • Interacting at a high professional level with internal and external stakeholders such as the WCVA, universities and senior managers to represent volunteering and be our leading voice
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across the business to foster and support our one team working ethos to support your own work in delivering the volunteer strategy and develop other area’s work delivery
  • Volunteer event management and risk assessing such as our Annual Volunteer Awards
  • Promoting volunteer recruitment and engagement opportunities across communities including attending in person events and talks and running creative recruitment campaigns
  • Spotting opportunities to engage volunteers and managing projects through working with colleagues and volunteers
  • Using your natural leadership and people engagement skills to inspire, celebrate and motivate potential volunteers to join US or continue their journey with US and demonstrate our company values through the way you go about performing

We’re open to discuss your available weekly working hours and would prefer you to be available to work between 28 – 35 hours a week flexibly so days and hours can be built in and around our standard operating week as set out in our staff benefits. Although there is home and office working you need to be flexible to travel across all our volunteer communities.

  • Line management experience when it comes to of staff and volunteers
  • Worked in a volunteer management centric role involving recruiting volunteers and supporting others to manage and develop volunteers
  • Been involved in designing volunteer inductions and best practice volunteer support and development work
  • Worked with others in delivering volunteer policies and processes such as safeguarding
  • Handled volunteer related paperwork and managed a volunteer database or CRM
  • Been involved in volunteer recognition work and promoting and / or representing volunteering to external and internal stakeholders
