Assistant Buyer

In the UK we operate over 162 UK stores stretched across England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the islands!  As a business, we also own the Early Learning Centre and Totally Toys brands, both of which are represented through the UK and international partnerships including Matalan and Mothercare. Working closely with our buying and merchandising teams our busy your job will be pivotal, providing commercial support for all aspects of the product buying process. This will include following through on buying decisions and being a point of contact and referral for both the business and our suppliers. This job offers a great opportunity to fully understand the role of buying and gain valuable experience and knowledge to support possible buying responsibilities in the future.

Alongside a keen interest in the toy market you will need a flexible approach and strong negotiation, communications and organisational skills. You will also have a natural ability to build effective working relationships enabling you to successfully liaise between internal teams, partners and with our supply base. Some overseas travel may be required.

 Key Responsibilities:

  • To work directly with the Buyer and support them in the delivery of all relevant KPI’s – across sales, profitability and stock.
  • To be the initial point of contact for both the business and suppliers for buying related issues and requests.
  • To ensure that all relevant information is passed to the Buying Administration team to accurately set-up up products and raise purchase orders.
  • To provide input on ranging and credible display quantities.
  • To support the Buying Administration Co-ordinator in managing the price changes and price establishment process.
  • To liaise with Buying, Marketing, Retail Operations and Merchandising team to support the agreed trading plan.
  • To work closely with Marketing and Promotions Manager to agree the catalogue content to be reviewed with the Director of Buying.
  • To support on the creation of wholesale ranging and planning in the UK and information sharing with our International Partners.
  • To prepare ad hoc data and business analysis as requested.   

Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience working in a fast-paced retail buying department. Preferably with a seasonal trading retailer
  • Natural interest and curiosity in retail trading and the toy market
  • Proven track record in delivering high quality administrative tasks
  • Excellent level of numeracy and PC literate with good Excel skills
  • Able to develop & manage relationships in a cross functional role
  • Excellent organisational skills with ability to multi -task and prioritise effectively with an ability to maintain calm under pressure
  • Commercially aware with strong business acumen
  • A natural ability to understand business and systems processes
  • Excellent written and professional written and verbal communication skills
  • A team player who is people/results orientated
