Physical Scientist

Purpose of Role

The Physical Scientist will work in support of the  Technology Group, undertaking support and development across a range of TRL projects from developing new measurement equipment and algorithms through to Quality Assurance of asset data. The Physical Scientist  will provide support to the team in carrying out this development from both practical and theoretical aspects of research and analysis, thereby helping to ensure that the quality of our outputs match our clients expectations.

The role is based from TRL’s head office in Wokingham, Berkshire, with occasional need to travel to client sites. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Use existing and new technology to develop practical solutions to research problems.
  • Apply knowledge of how things work to develop our theoretical understanding of data analysis outputs.
  • Add new functionality within existing software tools or develop new tools from scratch.
  • Test equipment and software and ensure the appropriate recording of results.
  • Process data and report the results to project managers.
  • Maintain concise and accurate records including written reports.
  • Help the wider Technology group to identify commercial opportunities through the practical and theoretical aspects of our projects.
  • Ensure Health & Safety and Environmental procedures are strictly followed.

Skills & Experience          

  • Able to demonstrate a flair for identifying solutions to practical problems.
  • Coding skills in either VB.NET, C/C++/VisualC++, Python
  • An aptitude for working both in the office and out in the field – either alone or as part of a team.
  • An attention to detail appropriate to undertaking assessments against detailed technical specifications.
  • Highly computer literate with experience using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • A full driving licence.
  • Experience of working with databases, including Microsoft Access and SQL would be highly desirable.

Interested applicants must be willing to work unsocial hours and away from home when required.

Qualifications

Qualifications in a science, engineering or programming based subject (preferably at degree level) or appropriate equivalent experience /capability.

Communication Requirements

Eligible candidates must be able to demonstrate fluency in both verbal and written English.
