Qualitative Researcher - 15 months fixed-term

About The Role

We currently have an opportunity for a Qualitative Researcher to provide maternity cover within our Human Factors and Behavioural Science team. In this role you’ll be researching and evaluating user behaviour to provide critical insights to our clients to design and optimise transport systems and encourage behavioural change.

You’ll get involved in a variety of research projects in areas as diverse as researching the safety of young and novice drivers, the behavioural issues that impact the safety of vulnerable road users and driver distraction from a range of external and in-vehicle factors. In addition, we have projects researching the latest innovative technologies looking at the integration of electric vehicles and investigating the impact of driverless cars. 

The role is based in our offices in Crowthorne, Berkshire.

Key Duties / Responsibilities

You will contribute to a variety of exciting research projects for UK and international clients in the public and private sectors in areas including driver/operator behaviour, vehicle automation and road safety.   The work involves real time driving simulation, on and off road trials, stakeholder and participant workshops and surveys, literature analysis and interpretation – providing innovations that solve our client’s problems and further scientific knowledge.   You’ll be engaging with internal and external specialists to further develop your own technical expertise, share your work and build your and TRL’s reputation in the field of behavioural science.   

Skills & Experience

We’re keen to hear from interested candidates who can demonstrate the following:-

  • Experience working in research projects.
  • Experience in qualitative research methods.
  • Proven experience of applying quantitative methods for research.
  • A customer-oriented attitude.
  • Experience of conducting user engagement including focus groups, structured interviews, survey design, facilitated workshops.
  • Ability to analyse data and interpret findings.
  • A good problem-solving ability, self-motivation and the enthusiasm to learn and develop.

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with experience in Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), Grounded Theory Analysis and those with a passion for and experience in all aspects of research survey and interviewing techniques, including developing topic guides.

Qualifications

  • A graduate degree in a relevant discipline.

Communication Requirements

Excellent communication skills and an ability to present research findings both verbally and in writing to clients and at conferences, working groups and events.
