Transport Economics Consultant

We have an exciting opportunity for an expert Transport Economist within TRL.  TRL’s legacy of transport research and innovation spans many decades and has saved millions of lives globally.  Continuing this legacy and with the opportunity to work on the latest transport and mobility solutions you will play a leading role in informing strategy and evolving policies and standards that enable the safe deployment of the latest technologies whilst ensuring the safety of our roads.

The role will ideally be based from our offices in Crowthorne, Berkshire or central Birmingham, however we will also consider remote and flexible working options for the right candidate.

Key Duties / Responsibilities

As the lead Transport Economist within TRL you will set and drive the strategy for building this capability within TRL and technically lead projects in these areas. 

You will play a key role in winning work for our transport research consultancy building relationships with clients from both the private and public sectors in the UK and internationally.   You’ll build opportunities, respond to bids, consult on requirements and prepare innovative solutions and high quality reports.  

You will be an integral part of our data and statistics discipline leading and contributing transport economics expertise to a wide variety of research projects in diverse areas from vehicle safety, research on connected and autonomous vehicles, sustainable mobility solutions to civil engineering, asset management and infrastructure.  

Skills & Experience

We are looking for a Transport Economist with significant experience who can demonstrate experience/competency ideally in the following:-

  • Significant experience in transport economic assessment, appraisal, modelling and demand forecasting including preparation of business cases for securing investment and cost benefit analysis techniques.
  • Experienced in building and applying economic models.
  • Knowledge of Central and Local Government justifications for investment including experience of successfully applying the HM Treasury Green Book guidance.
  • Familiarity with WebTAG.
  • Experienced in linking management of the transport network with the economic development of the country/region.
  • Experience in economic, social and environmental elements of transport appraisal.
  • Strong team working skills with the ability to work with and lead others to deliver high quality results.
  • Proactive, inquisitive approach, keen to understand and get involved in many projects.
  • Ability to supervise, guide and mentor less experienced members of the team.
  • Excellent written English with strong report writing skills.
  • Able to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
  • Commercial experience of bidding and winning work and tenders.

Qualifications

  • A degree in economics or a related discipline is essential.  A relevant PhD or MSc would be desirable.
  • A membership of a relevant professional institute would be desirable.
