About The Role

We currently have a need for a Senior Psychologist with strong qualitative research skills,  to provide maternity cover within our Human Factors Safety and Behavioural Science team. Applications will be considered on both a full-time and part-time basis, with the opportunity to work flexibly from our Crowthorne, Birmingham or Edinburgh Offices.

By researching and evaluating user behaviour we provide critical insights to help our clients design and optimise transport systems and encourage behavioural change. Our work includes researching the safety of young and novice drivers, the perceptual and behavioural issues that impact the safety of vulnerable road users - such as motorcyclists and cyclists - and the impact of distraction from a range of external and in-vehicle factors. We also have current projects looking at the integration of electric vehicles and investigating the impact of driverless cars.

Key Duties / Responsibilities

You will contribute to and lead a variety of exciting research projects for UK and international clients in the public and private sectors in areas including driver/operator behaviour, vehicle automation and road safety.   The works involves real time driving simulation, on and off road trials, stakeholder and participant workshops and surveys, literature analysis and interpretation – providing innovations that solve our client’s problems and further scientific knowledge.   You’ll be engaging with internal and external specialists to further develop your own technical expertise, share your work and build your and TRL’s reputation in the field of human behavioural science.

Skills & Experience

To be considered for this role, you will need to demonstrate that you have the following:

  • Several years of experience in delivering research projects and in applying the findings to provide solutions for clients.
  • Strong background in qualitative research methods.
  • Proven experience of applying quantitative methods for research.
  • A commercial and customer-oriented attitude.
  • Experience of conducting user engagement (focus groups, structured interviews, survey design, workshops).
  • Ability to analyse data and interpret findings.
  • A good problem-solving ability, self-motivation and the enthusiasm to learn and develop.

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with psychological qualitative research experience including Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), Grounded Theory Analysis and those with a passion for and experience in all aspects of research survey and interviewing techniques, including developing topic guides.

Qualifications

  • A graduate degree in Psychology is required.
  • A postgraduate qualification and chartered status would be an advantage.

Communication Requirements

Excellent communication skills and an ability to present research findings both verbally and in writing to senior level private sector and government clients.
