NUIG 2019 Summer Internship (In honour of the late Cathal Lavelle, B. Corp. Law)

Background to the Programme

In August 2013 our friend and colleague Cathal Lavelle passed away tragically. Cathal was a graduate of the Bachelor of Corporate Law Degree from the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG). In honour of his memory we established the Walkers Summer Internship Programme for Corporate Law and Civil Law students at NUIG.

Why Walkers?

At Walkers, our people are our greatest asset. They form our culture, make
us stand apart from our competitors and are the reason why our clients choose
to do business with us. We have an abundance of talented people in the firm which
makes for a high-performing but also friendly environment.
Walkers has an exceptional collegiate team culture which is underpinned by our core values of respect, integrity, consistency, honesty and trust.

What can I expect during an Internship?

The internship programme is a four-week paid internship which is run in
tandem with our trainee solicitor programme. The purpose of the programme
is to give you an insight into what it is really like to work as a trainee and ultimately as a solicitor in a pre-eminent financial services law firm. You will work closely with trainees, solicitors and partners on a wide range of complex, innovative and challenging matters. Interns spend a number of rotations in the following practice groups – investment funds, finance & capital markets, asset finance, corporate, insolvency and dispute resolution, tax or real estate.

You will attend induction and skills training during your first week and will also have the opportunity to attend in house training programmes throughout your internship. You will receive continual assessment and feedback over the course of the 4 week programme. In addition to this a mentor will be assigned to each intern to ensure they are fully integrated into the applicable practice area team.

Who should apply?
With the help and support of the School of Law at NUIG, Walkers is now accepting applications for its Summer Internship Programme. To maintain our position as a leading international law firm, we only recruit exceptional candidates. Successful candidates should be high achievers with strong educational records (i.e. top 20% of their class). Additionally, we look for candidates who are:

  • ambitious, entrepreneurial, determined and invested in the long-term development of themselves and the success of our firm
  • good communicators, problem solvers and team players
  • attending their second or third year of either the NUIG Corporate Law or Civil Law degrees and have a strong academic record.

Applicants will be notified as to whether they have been called for interview which will be held at Walkers’ offices in Dublin.

After the interview process has been completed, the successful candidate(s) will be offered a place on our summer internship programme.
